A league one side yes. But not one fighting for promotion.6-8 years ago where was Doyle? Wrong end of championship involved in relegation battles. All our better players have gone back up the leagues, he hasn't. I like him and love how he loves the club but taking off the red and white specs, if he was to leave it'd be a lower lg1 or lg2 club
Only because he's 34, if he was, say 28, he could get a championship club.

I think he'd have come, he loved it here by all accounts. From what I can see Liverpool asked for big money, Clough said no way and bought others, then at the end of the window Liverpool realised they wouldn't get that so sold him cheap. Think we should have been more patient and waited for the price to drop, confident we'd be at least two positions higher if we had, most influential of the trio we lost and was only getting better.
I think that it is the kind of signing the club have been making since the start of last season, players that will improve with us. In my opinion as well once there is any chance of signing him we should have been trying to get him.
If we had waited like we did with a striker we could be lower in the league x

We don't want a 34 yr old working his way down the leagues. If we had a team of them we'd be fucked

Yes one who is battling to stay up. A Blackpool,Brighton etc like he was with us and cov.
They came 12th and 8th in two of his seasons in fairness. Anyway lower end championship/top end L1 is where we're at, so what's the problem. He was also a good player for a lower end championship side.

The key is you have a balance, all the best teams blend youth and experience.
He wants to get us up so badly and I hope he does. A blades legend in my eyes but still would swap him in a flash if it improved us

Clearly, I'd probably give him a 1 year extension to be a squad player then phase him into coaching. His importance has shone in the cup against the better teams, the sort we'd play should we go up.

Crewe last season showed how important he was to us. But that showed me how bad we were too that he was missed so badly

ahha - I do like a Basham thread.

Can I just say that this person here has been one of the few, perhaps only one to support Basham in midfield since week 1, game 1.

Glad you have all eventually seen the light.

A broken watch is right twice a day, don't you know? ;)

I jest. Honestly, it's great if he's playing well in midfield now but he looked clueless in there during the first few months of the season.

Basham and Doyle are different kinds of player.

For me, longer term we should be looking at Coutts sitting deeper passing the ball like he was at Bristol City, and Basham and Wallace (if we can get him fit) either side of him playing the box to box role. They'd need to provide defensive cover and get in the box when crosses come in, much like Doyle and Basham did down at Bristol the other week. (It isn't Doyle's natural role, but he played it very well that day.

Love Basham. Great to watch and put 120 % in yesterday.

disagree totally about early midfield and if people had listened to Clough';s interviews in the first few weeks then they would have heard the same.
Clough is obviously wrong also? except he isn't wrong.
Basham has been plaited in about 5 positions since early season because he is a footballer and can adapt and this is seen by the management, that's why they do it. Fans have not given Basham credit for (a) moving to a new club (b) becoming a parent for the first time (in September/October) and (c) been moved around by the management because of his versatility.
We have a class footballer at this level and SOME can't see it - same applies to Mcnulty as he was given same stupid, £I've seen him once and he's crap" brigade.

My view of Basham yesterday was 100% for effort. 60% for distribution, with some ridiculous flicks in really promising positions. 60% for positional play, the gaps in central midfield in the second half were massive. Wasted good heading chance for goal, as usual headed it straight up in the air.

Overall 7/10.

If we are to play Basham in midfield it has to be because of his energy and height, not his constructive play. He reminds me of one of my favourite past midfielders, Simon Webster, maybe a better engine but limited in possession and an honest tryer. Nothing wrong with that of course but he has to line up with the right partners :

Basham/ Doyle - poor.
Basham/ Coutts - fine

The fact is Basham is a very good central defender and we are short of those. McEveley is a liabilty these days.

Fulwood , i did mention in a earlier post yesterday ,that you from day one have been a advocate of basham . Me , i was 50 / 50 . However the bloke is top notch and imo will only get better . The Wallace situation is disappointing for club , player and fans , and even next season may be a bit of a sick note , due to continual niggling injuries . Next season recruitment / buying power to rebuild and strengthen the team , will all depend on what league we are in.

Doyle will finish up on a free and a number of clubs will be interested , and quite rightly so. Also it will depend were he lives , and contract offered.

We are still not the finished article , but fully equipped for the promotion push and beyond . Us fans have just got to stop knocking our own players . Even Higdon will come good.

someone mentioned we had ten men?? ;)

OK so let's vacate central midfield then.:)

Hey it worked out all right in the end, all credit to everybody, including the manager whose substitutions I disagreed with at the time and still do. In actual fact I think Coventry tired themselves out and we finished the stronger. Great character from United including Basham, and the manager.

I thought he did really well yesterday and was probably our best player.
When he came I thought he looked a better centre half than centre mid but I'm now of the opinion he might be better suited in centre mid.
We need more height and steel in the time so assuming NC gives Kennedy a good run then perhaps the answer is Doyle / bash as CM's...
Another complication is he's on 9 bookings so any time now will be missing for 2 games I think

Basham this season is like Jagielka in his last couple of seasons here. Playing so well that we need to carbon copy him to have one Basham in midfield and Bashambauer at the back!

He gets into very good scoring positions when he plays in midfield and I reckon (hope :) ) that once he scores one he'll score a few....

Will be a big miss when he gets his 2 game suspension...

For the ones that have bothered to listen to Clough's after match comments, and I am sure many don't - he made reference to Freeman. Sure, at the time it looked strange, but he had a hand in both goals and generally played well at right side midfield. Clough made great play of the fella in row 10 of South stand who seriously criticised the Freeman substitution and was very vocal about it.

There are times when we all have to give credit to Clough- just let the man get on with his job.

Perhaps that person in row 10 should now vacate BDTBL and visit meadowhall on Saturdays;)

anyone want to own up?

He got far too much stick early on in my eyes. I think he played fairly well in midfield at the start, Bradford particularly springs to mind, although I think he was being asked to play a role not entirely suited to him. It seemed he had been tasked with attempting to get into the box and be a goalscoring midfielder, which I don't think he is, and he always finished clumsily. Rather than being the man waiting in the box he should drive with the ball to the box, We missed someone doing that when McDonald left, then Coady (and Scougall to a lesser extent) did it a bit, hopefully Bash can be the one to take over that role.

You did indeed and the main point is ALL players, especially when coming to the club need to be given time to settle instead of jumping on their backs with kneejerk reactions. Basham and Mcnulty are prime examples. Not all players hit the ground running like Done, although the difference with Done is that he was already match fit having been playing for Rochdale. I just despair at times at some of our fans.

Honestly, it's great that he's adapted. I saw more games at the start of the season than now, so I saw him play a fair few times then but not since he's been moved back into midfield recently. I thought he looked rubbish the 5-6 games of him I saw in midfield. If all you are saying is that you knew all along he'd be great in there, then well done, pat on the back. I'm not sure how we can argue about that other than the jury might still be out on if Basham is a great midfielder. Just like a few duff games at the start of the season wasn't enough to judge him (and I didn't want anything more than for him to be dropped then, I wasn't ruling out him ever being good, that's ludicrous), then a few good games now doesn't mean he's swatted away any doubts.

P.S. Can we have a chart of all the players who are due to have a baby in the next few months, so we can know when they'll be shit and when not?

Clough should know our rows are identified by letter and not number ;)

good at cb

works exceptionally hard in midfield

woeful in the box imo

To be fair, the whole team was poor and inconsistent early season. The debacle surrounding Butler/Doyle/Collins masked a lot of problems and started fan against fan primarily as the bookies made us odds on favourites and after 2nd half of last season. I just thought it unfair that Basham and Mcnulty seemed to be singled out as scapegoats - a fact that has been knocked on the head as both have proved decent footballers. No one likes being in this division, but as to what some fans expect is just beyond normal logic at times and has been admirably explained by a small number of vocal and vociferous "know nothings" that seem to sit all over the ground and find it hard to hold their own council at times.

As for babies - not sure if you are aware of Mrs Murphy having their first child recently - again a point mentioned by NC and may also point to his free flowing form and recent good scoring record of Jamie.

Perhaps we need a gigolo to go round the club - might make the Champions League that way ;) Any takers?

Someone needs to tell him that he only needs to clear the ball away from our box when he is in it and not the oppositions when he's in there!

Absolute workhorse though ⭐
