Basham was bought to play in doyle role where he offers more pace, mobility, height in both areas and a goal threat. This is not a criticism of doyle its just that bashams a step up.
Basham got a lot of unjust criticism early season when he was doing the scougall or wallace role die to theoir injuries, but thats not his strength, thats a very different role.

We missed Doyle before Wallace went off , he is a better midfielder than basham. Basham looks a quality centre back though.they would both start for me.

Dont think he is registered to play in the FA Cup as Palace wouldnt allow him so I think he misses the Oldham game
Do you have to be registered to play in the FA Cup? Thought you were just registered with the team.

Palace could technically give us permission now so he would miss the game anyway and not be cup tied

No, he has to be registered one week before the 1st round ties

Forgot to add that he is still a Palace player that can play league matches for us on loan, he is registered with them for cup matches unless they allow us to register for any cup before the cup tie

Crazy, but I think Bash is playing well because he is not accustomed to the role, and therefore he has to constantly be on his toes and concentrating. Hope he doesn't become a bit complacent, because that might be when mistakes start to occur.

At the minute, with the 3 CBs doing OK, I think it helps them all - they know that one bad game and they could lose the shirt for quite a while.

But when they both started at Doncaster, it was still Wallace in Doyle's holding role and Basham in Coady's box to box role.

I don't understand why Clough thinks that he's best suited to the bot to box role. I'm struggling to think when he's played it for us with any proficiency, yet when he's played in a more defensive role either at CB or DM he's been excellent.

I had hoped we'd stopped with the square pegs round holes syndrome we suffered from.

Personally he'd be the first CB name on my teamsheet. The others can fight it out for the remaining shirt, with McEveley keeping whispering Bob honest too.

Hopefully remembered this right but think Clough said after the game that it would definitely be Basham who came in to replace McCarthy and that he thought centre back was his best position.

I think if Wallace would have stayed on the pitch,we'd have seen some tinkering from Clough, and the two of them would have interchanged quite a bit as the game went on.That's my guess anyway and as you have quite rightly pointed out quite a few times for us,Cloughy likes a tinker.

I find it very disappointing that Basham does not/is not getting the credit for being a decent all round footballer.

His ability to be box to box (early season) was lost on so many people.
He was at that time with us playing 4-6-0, the one most likely to come out of midfield and close the CH's down.
NC said himself early doors that Basham could have had 4-5 goals due to his ability to arrive late in the box.
He has adapted well to CH, because he is a footballer - can take a touch, then another and still have composure.
Before anyone says I am no 1 fan...NO - just appreciate a good footballer, which he is and is now getting the recognition from the "I have seen him once abd he is shit, knockers".

Composure is something you cannot teach players. Doyle does not have it, proved many times when the opposition closes us down. Basham has it in spades - Reid also has it, even at 17. Mcnuts has it, Flynn doesn't. Murph has it also, coupled with that ability to tease a fullback and "show" him the ball. Murphy has very quick feet and is surprising quick for someone with splayed feet.

His shot at Donny might have ended up in Row Z if it wasn't for that splayed foot.

Basham deserved most of the stick he got earlier in the season, his late runs into the box were often because he spent most of his time stood in the centre circle pointing rather than keeping up with play. As soon as he played at centre back he was like a different player, kind of like Jagielka used to be, he can do a job in midfield, but his best position in the team is easily centre back.

The one positive of the Walsall game was Basham at centre back, so Clough moving him back into midfield was baffling. He's currently our best central defender and should play every game there, not get shuffled around to accommodate loanees and Clough's favourites.

I don't agree with all of the post because i do think the players didn't pick him out enough when making them runs, but that second paragraph is absolutely spot on.
