Basham

We have lacked a centre half who can run forward with the ball since Maguire. Basham did that a couple of times last night. I also liked the way he and Doyle just went up to Magahey after his mistake and had a quiet word and calmed him down.

Shame neither of them had a pop at Alcock for ducking out of the initial through ball what left McGahey in the shit.

It saddens me that numerous people wanted to have a pop at NUMEROUS of the signings early on, including Basham

Basham is proving what a consistent and adaptive player he is. He is versatile and can fit in almost anywhere on the park.

He will probably never be a 9 out of 10, but you get 7 out 10 each game from him.

Give the lad a break - he did ok last night in virtually a new position for us.

Cloughs praise for Basham was "He competed for everything" - that is what he gives us.

I think people, and I include myself in this said he wasn't good enough to take Coady/Wallace's role in this team and he never will be in my opinion. I like his a lot at centre half as he seemed to know his role alot better. He also gave McGahey more leadership than he has received so far this season.

We'll have to see on that, but he did do well at Bradford in the same role. Clough said that in some games his attributes are needed in midfield.

Not wanting to undo my good work in praising him, but far from 7 out of 10 each game, the ratings from his first five games for us were:

4.48 from 136 votes
3.34 from 29 votes
5.64 from 42 votes
5.49 from 92 votes
And 8.3 from 27 votes.

His first four games were consistently bad, then he must have had a good one against West Ham. Although, coming away from winning a game like that, I can't imagine a fan wanting to give anybody a shit mark.

I think it is safe to say, as wizadry pointed out, he is a defender, not an attacking, or box-to-box midfielder. He has played well in defensive roles in the last two games, and long may it continue.

His role at Bradford was for the most part the same as in the first few games. Him and Scougall to the side of an anchoring Doyle.

It is quite obvious you are not a fan. that's fine.

NC obvious thinks he's a decent player as he keeps playing him - Clough's verdict and opinion is good enough for me.

You have appoint about Coady - the thing I will mention about Coady, is that he was slagged off by numerous people in the early part of the season.

Players need time to settle - perhaps now his wife has had their baby, perhaps Basham will settle down a bit more.

One thing is for certain, the management team like Basham, so the knockers are going to get pretty tired most weeks.

Well Latters is using ratings taken from 4 games encompassing nearly 300 votes, and in not one of the first four games did he reach a 5 average. He has had two pretty solid games now, but why shouldn't fans have high standards of new signings?

I think he will be a useful addition to the squad, especially if he can fill in comfortably at centre half, but some of his performances (e.g. Swindon away) did give real cause for concern that Basham could even do the basics.

If the management team like him so much, hopefully we'll see him being played in roles where he can be more effective than he has been for most of the season so far.

Coady didn't play for Clough in the 1st half of last season. I think everyone will admit we saw the best of him after Clough arrived. In regards to Basham, they obviously didn't rate his early season performances either considering he has only come in for the last few games.

Criticising peoples performances aren't always knocking and if people don't play well, why on a forum can't people say that without being name called. Same goes for the other side and clapping.

Not sure why you've taken it so personally with Basham though?

I know this isn't a very technical response but I thought he was AWESOME last night, and I've slated him since day 1

I haven't taken it personal with Basham - numerous fans appear to have a self destruct button with new players - quite a few have come in for criticism after the mass changes from last season. NC is having to and is restructuring the entire playing staff, slowly moulding a team in his principles.

It is as though - a couple of bad matches, when new to the club and they are shit - players need time to settle at a new club.

As for Coady, you are correct that he got better - we were the first club that Coady had played for on a regular and permanent(ish) basis. It took him time to settle and the club benefitted - he was a 20 year old, away from his comfort zone and his home town. The fact that they are paid oodles of cash does exclude them from some of the pressures of life.

All players need a bit of space and time and settle and gel as a team.

NC will get it right and it's beginning to work now after a slow start, but some of the criticism is totally unwarranted eg: Baxter is fat.....no he isn't.

Well, certain fans need a scapegoat - ALWAYS - some fans need to vent their spleen at a player - Basham has copped for that early season.

Every club needs a player like Basham who does a lot of the dirty work and allows the Baxters/Scoogs/Murphies of this world to flourish. It's the dirty work that a lot of fans don't see.

As for finding a place in the team, it appears as though Basham is quite possibly first on the team sheet instead of Davies.

Some of us can remember Bob Booker - Basham has had a similar start at SUFC as him - and the rest is history as they say.

Basham by his own admission in the interview after last nights game said he had not had the best start to the season. Difficulties in moving, including moving house plus a new born all at same time had not helped. He said now settled in and is happy to play in whatever position NC wants him to play. He does not have a preferred position.

Do we take that as backtracking on stating he wanted to specialise rather than be a utility man when he arrived in the summer?

Definitely worth giving him some more games at CB after last night.

Yep you are right about scapegoats and I don't want to be seeming to contribute to that, but I'm afraid Basham's early inadequacies weren't explainable by his doing work 'unseen'. He was very seen, and he was seen because he didn't look to have a clue. He seems to have settled now and perhaps we can rely on him.

It's good that you are so positive about our players though :) Slowly we are gathering momentum, still not approaching what we are fully capable of, and hopefully Basham will be a big part of us steaming on to success.

Your right about Alcock Sheffielder but, there's no excuse for the comedy defending from Harrison especially when he did something similar earlier on in the match, certainly appeared to be a breakdown in communication between him and Howard.

The one thing I noticed last night being sat behind the goal (literally within earshot of howard) is that he does not do communication. He does not talk to his defenders at all. During the Maghey incident, he wasn't even talking to him or shouting at him and Maghey just had his hands up inviting howard to come for the ball. I was baffled, as was a Man U fan who came with me, he couldn't believe that throughout the entire half, Howard just did not talk to his defense.

That is interesting as I always thought Howard was a big improvement on George vocally, obviously not, we don't seem to have had anyone capable of it since Paddy left.

He's usually very vocal.

I reckon we've unearthed a bit of a gem in Basham in the centre back role .
Solid in the air and on the deck and really organises the back four well not seen since the Morgan days.
He's now far from the whipping boy most Blades thought he would turn into personally I reckon he could be captain material.

I suspect we may never see Collins again.

Is he fifth or sixth choice now?

Paddy
Basham
McEverley
McGahey
Alcock
Collins/Kennedy?

If we'd started him there from day one and not tried to pretend he was a midfielder I suspect our record might be a bit better.

Here I go again - in Basham protection mode:

Yes he looks half decent at CH, although McCarthy and Mceverly look like 1st choices, everything being equal etc.

From listening to Cloughs interviews, I have suspected from even pre-season that he wanted Wallace and Basham as his 2 central midfield players and Donny was the first time it was possible.

Bit harsh on Doyle who has been excellent.

Basham will probably start with Mceverly in the next 3 home games with Paddy's red card meaning a straight 3 game ban.

PS: always said Basham was a good player Bob Booker mark 2 ;)
