I’d have voted Fleck, although he hasn’t been at his best since lockdown eased, and injured as well of course.

But I’m delighted for Basham. He’s had a fantastic season and has given 100% every second of every game.

I honestly don’t knows how he does it because he appears to me to be an unnatural footballer, ungainly, awkward, prone to some odd moments, but he’s played out of his skin and beyond his ability. Totally deserved!

Those comments were very similar to (I think) Alex Ferguson when he offered a fairly damning opinion of Liverpool's Henderson, so much for professional critics uh?

Basham is the backbone of this side and has been more or less since we signed him. What I love about Bash is his instinctive reading of a situation, he's more than capable of assessing a situation in order to find a solution, but overall he's a great member of our squad and deserves all the accolades that come his way.

I’d have gone for John Egan but this is richly
deserved.

He’s not looked great as a CM (on his debut I thought he was the worst player I’d ever seen play for SUFC) or RWB but has clicked perfectly into place as a centre half.

We will really struggle to fill that right sided role when he eventually leaves as it was tailor made for him. Even in his early 30s he doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. Reckon he can do the same job for another 4 years yet.

Technically, Bash is superb, let alone for a CB. However, because he speaks with a geordie accent and we bought him for peanuts from Blackpool, passion, commitment, hard-work etc will always be trotted out first. Of course, he has all of those qualities in spades, but he’s also a very, very, very good footballer...

When Clough signed him he played in a pre season game in defence and he looked fucking dismal. One of those 'what the fuck have you signed?' moments.

But I remember seeing him playing out wide midfield against Walsall at home a few seasons ago and he set Billy up to score with some pretty decent footwork. I got this 'mebbe there's summat about Bash' feelings.

Now he is one of the pistons! Like Egan and O'Connell, you notice them more when they aren't there.

The thing with Bash is that no matter how we are playing on the day, he virtually always 'turns up' and puts in a performance. It might not be a world beating performance but he is so consistent week in week out and never let's us down. On the few occasions that Utd have been really poor under CW, Bash has been the best of the bunch.

He thoroughly deserves the POTY and he is a real credit to himself and the club. Well played Sir.

He’s just been great all season; while there’s at least 7-8 that could have been in contention, none of the rest come close to maintaining that level of quality without major dips for so long. I went for Jack O'Connell.
I've always thought our fans are slightly less warm to him than others (Bash, Egan, Fleck etc..) & I've never really understood why. It's rare we give him man of the match or gush with praise for him. He's always identified by players (along with Fleck) as being our best professional & trainer.

John Egan seems to rank higher in the minds of our fans (see POTY voting) but I remember a lot of occasions where he got done by the high ball over the top.
I remember him having games in which he really struggled & I just don't remember Jack O'Connell having those sorts of games, or making those sorts of errors.

When Jack was out of the side we went to pieces.

Most agree he's our most valuable asset, but he rarely gets the accolades.

Delighted for Bash & I'm sure he'll use all of this outside recognition in his salary negotiations. He doesn't warrant the same money as Egan, or O'Connell given his market value but he is integral to how we play & as such deserves rewarding.
