You cant form any sort of opinion on a striker when Weir was manager ,his tactics made King ,Taylor, Porter , Baxter ,Bunn ,Ironside ,Cuthbert Dibble and Grubb all look shit. At this level you need 2 strikers who can work as a partnership ,Porter and Miller have done well together ,Porter and Evans did well too. We have plenty of choice up top now and look like scoring goals.

... but as we all know there must be one scapegoat in every Blades team. Porter fits the bill perfectly and whilever he's on the pitch at least it deflects some of the often over-reactive criticism towards the other poor saps.

It's vert lazy to dismiss criticism as scapegoating. I think Ird up to you to explain a one in five strike rate. Or why he couldn't make Chesterfields bench. Etc etc.

But that's just simply not true is it ? Cook rated him at Chesterfield he missed one game because of a knock and started others in front of their regular strikers and isn't his record for Utd 12 in 49 starts ?

If we are a team that wants promotion then we need strikers who score goals.

Porter does not score goals.

Exactly!

Although maybe Porter and Miller might work long term but it will be Miller that we will be relying on to score.

If Miller gets any kind of injury then we are back to square one.

Clough will defiantly start with Porter Miller combo.
The thing about Porter he puts himself about holds it up, little flick ons makes life difficult especially in the air for defenders.
Will he bring Baxter , Cuvaliar, Murphy etc more into it with his style we'll see against Gillingham.

It also helps that the likes of Lappin (who I thought had an excellent game) and Coady were playing far enough up the pitch to be able to get on to the flicks on and lay offs so we had a lot more options than just Miller.

My Chesterfield supporting mate said he was abysmal and couldn't make the bench in the end. He was completely unimpressed when he was initially in the team.

Did Cook try to extend the loan? I very much doubt it.

I simply can't remember the last time he scored or was directly involved in a United goal.
From open play?

Opinions will differ (until he's played about 3 matches when I'm sure the usual consensus will develop for the twelfth time). But the statistics aren't made up. He's a very poor striker. FACT.

:)

Lappin seems to be improving every game after a shaky start he will be looking to move the ball into the channels bringing Porter into play.

8 in 59 for us. He's scored 17 goals in the last 4 years. But I'm scapegoating him.

Not only do you want to scapegoat Porter but you appear to have airbrushed him out of yesterday's game.

It depends whether you qualify a striker based only on the goals he scores or whether you look at the overall modern game and way the different strikers play / the role given to them.

We all want to see goals FACT which is why we get on the case when strikers don't score goals however we have to look at what porter is all about and the qualities he possesses eg hold up play and link play. He might not smash the ball into the back of the net week in, week out however he battles his socks off more than most and carries on going for 90 minutes. He will stick any part of his body into an effort to win the ball whether hopeless or not and more often than not he wins it and flicks the ball down bringing other players into the game.

In this league, with this squad a player like Porter for me is vital. The ability to bring a ball down, hold it up and bring in his striker partner and the midfield is vital for us. He did this all day long yesterday, ok he missed a couple of sitters but shit happens. He was Man of the match and contributed hugely to us winning that game yesterday and I will tell you something. Had it been Taylor or King up front yesterday alongside Miller we would have most probably come away losers.

Porter worked his bollocks of yesterday, yes he missed an open goal but also had a header well saved. Its his hold up play and bringing other players into the game that works for me. If he could score as well as he could hold up he would be playing in the championship. Without getting arty farty Porter plays a bit of a pseudo striker role. he is neither an out and out striker, nor playing off the front man nor an attacking midfielder

On another note I thought Lappin had a great game, he seemed to be involved in everything

Probably his best game in a blades shirt to be fair, agree with this whole-heartedly.

Just clutching at straws really but the people who make the decisions aren't giving us any options.

You need a prolific striker alongside a non scoring one such as Porter, and we don' have one.

He plays a support striker OK at times. But nothing more. He's weak on the floor and in the air, so even that role he's limited.

There is a reason manager after manager drops him, loan after loan he doesn't impress, and most weeks after most weeks he doesn't score.

People call him a scapegoat. I'm more amazed how short memory it seems many of our fans have. He' s far from a scapegoat. He's a really lucky player to be playing for a club like us, but one of the reasons a club like us is where we are. We must stop apologising for such poor standards.

So what's going to happen on Saturday is that Porter will be dropped for King and most of you are going to not happy by the sounds of it. I don't want either as like Pinchy I like my football with gravy.

I am all for Baxter myself, however has anyone thought that Taylor and Miller would do together. Taylor's pace and running the channels could make some space for Miller.

The fact that people are high fiving Porter for having a good game against Colchester after missing 2 easy chances and scoring a penalty is the reason why this club is where it is. It's not just Porter though, Hill gets free passes for having good games but people forget the fuck ups that lead to goals in nearly every game.

In my years of watching United this is the lowest we have ever been, yet people want to accept watching shit players because some of them work hard.

He is excellent in the air. He wins a massive amount of headers and flick ons.

Taylor works very hard, but I have yet to see him hold the ball up well, hes too chaotic.

Exactly we accept shit players and other clubs cast offs.

OK one out of ten end up being a real coup like McCall but most are not but we as a club are happy to give these players stupid contracts.

Who would believe that 3rd division Sheffield United would recruit any players that another side at some stage were willing to sell?

We all want better, but praising a performance on it's merits is our problem? I think not.
