Banging the ball upfield....

And just having everyone run after it. With Olsen as a sweeper.
Im no football genius but I can't se this being any worse than our current set up.
And don't just slag it off.. Give me reasons!

Certainly better than seeing our defence pass it side to side several times before giving it to Olsen who is then forced to hoof it upfield under pressure after we have wasted 10 minutes. At least we would have about a 50% chance of making it to the half way line before we give the ball away.

Get your trackie on - your hired!

You jest, but the tactic for the first game of the season really was "Smash it towards the corners and have Mousset and Burke chase it".

Who started this trend of 6-yard box twatting about? And why? I recall Arsenal struggling with it 2-3 years ago. Sooner that football comes up with another trend, like maybe driving at defenders, through balls and an entertaining style, the better.

Next time I see Olsen pass it a few feet to the right back who passes it to the left back, who panics with the opposition bearing down on us, I am going to boo very very loudly.

Time and a place, we do well in possession, generally. And we can put football most sides.

The problem with direct balls at pace is that you either need someone pacey running onto the ball at pace or we need someone to hold the ball to bring others into play.

To be fair, it is a slight variation of a tactic that most opponents this have used very effectively against us this season.

If you bang the ball upfield with the players we have you give the opposition the ball quicker hence more chance of them being able to do something with it, it might not be any worse but all we need to do is manoeuvre the ball quicker when passing it side to side, pulling the opposition players all over the place, tiring the opposition out at the same time.

Ultimately, we need better movement, better technical players and quicker ones too, in other words we need about 6 or 7 new players to play the style Slav has played all his career. Slav could change it up but we don’t have a squad full of players good enough to play any system at the moment as they are shot both mentally and physically.

Dave Bassett, channel ball football worked great with Deane and Agana type players and midfielders who supported them from behind.

There's not a lot wrong with how Slav wants us to play the game.

What we don't do is protect the 2 x CD's or have 2 x CD's that can look after themselves properly.

We also don't have a 20 goal a season striker who can bang them in given the opportunities we create.

For the ones who went to Blackburn - Brereton showed the sort of striker we need when playing with only one up top.

What we really need is better players as long as Slav is given that time.

Depends on who’s doing the banging...

Like you I'm hoping it is a passing fad. I recall Arsenal coming to the Lane and making a mess of it too

What? Do you mean we should deliberately bypass our daring duo in midfield? That would mean Norwood and Fleck not doing anything positive with the ball!

oh wait, I see your crafty plan now …..
:)

And there lies your problem. We don't have midfielders who can collect, move up the pitch, pass into space, gain ground, set their midfielders backwards or even lay in a killer final pass or shoot on goal. What we have is a long-ball showpony and a frankly useless grifter. Elsewhere we have an expensive, nesh crock and a pair of attack minded midfielders who don't plug into anything we own. Osborn isn't a midfielder, neither is Didsy of McPub.

Where are you Michel Brown, Dane Whitehouse, Trevor Hockey, Don Hutchinson?

There's a cemetery in Killamarsh currently measuring 5.7 on the Richter Scale as Pinchy furiously spins in his grave.
Didn't know Pinchy had passed away just thought he'd left the forum?

I think the 1970 World Cup Brazil team started this trend. Walking pace football with defenders starting the plays and dictating the pace...Unfortunately they won fucking thing. So since then it’s been an ambition of every coach to play like this. But the clever one’s knew when they didn’t have the talented players to play like that..

Most games I watch, there seems to be a large percentage where teams that play the short ball at goal kicks end up with either the keeper or a defender just lumping it forwards anyway, due to the pressure the oppo are applying. Seems a waste of energy playing it short so much. Mix it up ffs!

It started when defenders were allowed in the box for goal kicks.

Our problem is that we haven't got any big blokes up front to win headers.

Bring back The Chief.
