Baldock, Stevens and Stearman

Out of position time after time, gave the ball away, didn’t stop the ball coming in - tell me what I missed?

I actually thought both wingbacks were very poor defensively first half.

They did improve but I think that may have been partly down to Villa looking to play through Grealish more as the game went on.

Penalty aside, I'm not sure how much Stearman did wrong, although there was some woeful lack of communication at times when they were in and around our box. I didn't think he was particularly worse than the other two CBs.

I thought Stearman was excellent second half

Thought Stearman was fine. Baldock looked all over the place, but his first bad game for us, so happy to put it down to one off.

Onwards and upwards hopefully.

I must be watching a different game....they barely had a sniff second half...
Agreed but that was because of a Jack, CCV, Lundstram and Basham. Stearman doesn’t win headers and lets his man get goal-side too often, much as I was hoping that he was going to be a great signing.

We’ll have to agree to differ, thought the pen was a good tackle and he played well generally today.
UTB!

Was it Stearman who got caught under the ball for their 2nd? Much better 2nd half though.
Baldock kept making runs upfield, but most of the time the pass into him was shocking.

Baldock was shocking defensively first half - caught out several times - and the defence generally wasn’t great that half. Much more solid 2nd half. Good point after such a poor start.

I think most of the flack Stearman gets is from the Wright lobby who still can't accept CW's reasoning for leaving him out. That was not a penalty and Stearman played well today. Stevens was OK and Baldock had probably his worst game for us this season, but overall he's done enough this season to justify his position.

Stevens has been off for weeks (CW can't really rate Lafferty anymore) and Baldock is still getting back to match fitness.

Stearman is yet to convince for me.

For me, it's the Sheff United lobby - not an anti Stearman lobby.

There is better than Wright AND Stearman - without the good start we have, contributed a lot by Wright just sitting in the centre of the defence we would have real problems by now.

It's a question to the forum - has Stearman played in a back 3 - if so, where did he play?

Apart from the stupid challenge to give away the pen, and it WAS a pen, Stearman did ok.

Stevens and Baldock have fell badly out of form.

Yes but once some of our fans get it in their head a player is crap, it becomes very difficult to shift that opinion.
I even think some off them don't actually watch the games.

.............and some of our fans can't seem to understand that some believe Wright does a better job for the team.

Results actually prove that point at present.

I don't think Basham, JOC & Wright were exponents of playing in a back three either until CW showed up.

We've just drawn at Villa Park ffs minus our two best players and yet some are taking this as an opportunity to slag Stearman off.

So i'll put a question to you. Do you think we would have won today if Wright had played instead of Stearman?

Apart from a couple of heart-stopping moments, we defended stoutly second half. I think Wilder must've told Stevens and Baldock to concentrate on defensive duties because first half they got caught upfield too often.

Stevens has never been any great shakes defensively (his tackling is especially poor) but his offensive contribution has dried up, too. I'd like to see a loan in that position to provide some competition if Laffs is no longer in contention.

Stearman looks really solid to me but then makes these glaring mistakes that get people on his back. I like both him and Jake but I agree with the theory that Wright brings a calmness to the back three that we don't have otherwise. Something MUST change at the back because we've been a shambles and it's letting down the forwards, who keep doing their job quite well.
