Baldock on Jokanovic

And?

Some of our players aren’t capable of playing any other way and look lost if they’re not told how to play for 90 mins with instructions.
We do have some absolute thick cunt fans. Lots of them.

Problem?
Are not the fans you describe entitled to pay their money and watch what they prefer ?

Slav wasn’t the right fit at the time, not because he isnt a very good manager, but because he needed funds to build a squad. Funds that we simply dont have.

That is on the board, if they werent prepared to back Slav then they should have just given it Hecky. I cant believe how much money we wasted on hiring Slav then sacking him just to take us back to where we were at the end of last season.

For as long as I’ve watched United whenever we’ve tried to change the philosophy its lasted less than a season and we’ve reverted back to type.

If anything, this season has proved more than ever that we have a squad full to the brim of round pegs round hole footballers and in fairness to Hecky, he is severely limited to what he can do to change the shape of a game if plan a is failing because of this.
Spot on 👍👍

Think the seeds of Slav’s downfall were sown on deadline day when we failed to bring the two loan wingers in. Left him with a very inflexible squad and we were doing the whole square pegs round holes thing.

That’s a failing of the none footballing staff in terms of choosing to move late to save cash we gambled and lost.
Agree .. Don’t think the issued lay with Slav or his staff .. more the board when they realised that the man they’d appointed needed to spend some money to mould a team he wanted 👍

Interesting take.

“I've not got a bad word to say about him. He was really good, really professional and he obviously knows his stuff. He's a very well-respected manager. But I've been at Sheffield United for five seasons and I know what the fans expect. They like their good football, but they also like fast, aggressive football with pressing and physicality and we just came away from that and we lost our identity a little bit. Who knows, if he had persisted it may have been successful in the end."

Yep. That last sentence is key to me. He’s got a track record of getting teams promoted when he’s backed and trusted, and gives you incredible football to watch while doing it.

Shame our players are a bit too dim to play anything but 5 at the back. Was a chance to change the whole culture of the club for the future. But nooooo… KICK IT FORRARD!! GERRITINT BOX!!! WHAT THA PASSING IT RARNDT DEFENCE FUAR!! HAVE A BASTUD SHOT WILL THA!!
Heaven forbid we’re stuck with the style that Wilder bestowed on us.

Not really chief no, just be a bag of nerves like everyone else. Yourself? Watching it on box?
Yeah nervous. Away form worries me. Hopefully more of what we saw at Bristol City but a bit more clinical. Train down at 1, stopping over - hopefully a few drinks celebrating 3 points.

I like this new friendly relationship we’re developing. I’m not sure how far it can go though - your negativity would annoy me… 😝

Great observation.

Hecky's overperformed with the hand he's been dealt.

But it won't be improved upon next season as a system and large proportion of players that were used to take us from League 1 to the Premiership, were ultimately exposed, failed and are now beyond their best before date.

Time for new management and squad (and directorate?) - but unlikely to happen.

So decade plus meandering towards the Premier League enters season two.

Enjoy the helter-skelter ride.

Most managers recognise good footballers and need the club to back them

They aren't a "Make a silk purse out of a sows ear" type of manager.

Which is why most managers don't do the business here.

Even the ones that can make a silk purse out of a sows ear eventually just give up and lose the will to live after a while

i.e. Bassett, Warnock, Wilder

Add Wilson to that as well

Fantastic football first season, laughing, smiling, joking, "Used to be shite, but now he's alright"
It was only ruined at the end by the Ched Evans situation.

Second season, he needed help from the board, didn't get it, and that was it, no more laughing, no more joking, and in the end he looked ill.

That's a really good observation, that I'd only rule out on a couple of minor technicalities:

1: "Making a Silk Purse out of a Sow's Ear" to me means gaining promotion or winning FA/League Cup.
2: Ched Evans could just have easily have been injured and out for the season, instead of being incarcerated and out of the club.

So the lack of a Plan B in case of our most important goal scorer and match winner being injured was a major managerial (and board) oversight and blunder that ultimately cost us all.

Only Wilder who wanted to be backed could get something out of hasbeens and untried. Which is ironic as we backed him the most and he loaded us with shite. Reckon Heckinbottom has a better eye for a player, but could improve those who have a point to prove.

We did have a plan B but Will Hoskins got injured (hernia). The other main impact of Evans being imprisoned rather than just injured was on the rest of the team: the players were clearly in shock at MK Dons the day after. We were as flat as I've ever seen us.

True enough, I'm still trying to understand how Beattie missed that sitter that day.

Also remember classic Banter from a Blade shouting out in a moment's silence before an MK corner kick:

"Lowton, mark the post, it won't move!"

Back to the subject, overcoming big set-backs is what differentiates the quality of managers and players alike.
Wilson, did wonders, but ultimately didn't succeed.

I had high hopes on Slav and got bit dissapoonted. I didn't have high hopes on Hecky on got huge positive surprise. Biggest thing Slav left for us is MGW!

What I cannot understand is how the Board appointed Slav without both sides agreeing what the finances were in terms of what budget he needed to build a team. Surely he was asked and presumably he wouldn’t have taken the job unless he was promised an adequate budget?
anyway water under bridge.
History will probably record that the Board got it completely wrong. Had they appointed Hecky from the start we might well have got promoted.
