The fact of the matter is we've looked better (as we always do) when Norwood plays that pivot role.

Nah. Refute that.

If Norwood sticks to his core role (which he is still not very good at, hence being bypassed and legging opponents over) he is 'okay'.

He still needs to lock in that every time he gets the ball, it doesn't have to end in a 'watch this fucker' lofted ping to the wingbacks (who aren't as advanced in recent games) or a clip across the pitch for Wilderball.

If he carries it (as Sander can) and threads the forwards or moves it up the pitch with Berge/Lundstram/Fleck or just finds that harmony that Duffy/Coutts/Fleck had then things might work better.

pommpey

Lets face it, Berge joined us in the twilight of the 19/20 purple patch and he was poor to begin with (not his fault, just adjusting to this ultra competitive league).

By the time he got in the squad on merit, the team he played in was a shadow of it's former self... negative, no confidence, no clean sheets, no possession. He often looked like our only capable player, albeit passing sideways and low in confidence, but nothing different from his colleagues.

I think he will do wonders coming into a team in form (hopefully) and with confidence to their play, feel like he might be the last piece of the puzzle for potential survival.

Wilders biggest mistake was breaking the midfield up to shoehorn Berge in. We are only just starting to play again with the 3 midfielders. Not having a go at Berge ,I just dont think his style of play is suited to our style or the English game.

Insert the “why not have both” meme here.
Different players for different circumstances.
We need to move away from the reliance on a first 11 and utility players to plug gaps. We should use the squad better.
Also could be a chance to use an Atalanta style double pivot next year in the Championship if we’re feeling a little more adventurous than the flat midfield three

I like Berge, but he's looked far better on the right of the 3,he doesn't move the ball quick enough or so far shown the range of passing to play the pivot.. Norwood keeps things moving and can switch the play, and tries to play forward more.
I agree without the ball he has failings, but when he's not there our possession suffers.

I think Berge can play in Lunny's role alongside Norwood.

Well this poll isn’t going the way the OP wanted is it? 🤣
Ha! Good! Too many fans flip flopping at the minute - 2 weeks ago Norwood was public enemy number one, finished and the reason we were shit. Now he’s the second coming and Berge’s the reason we’ve been crap.
Have we not learnt to not write everyone off yet.
God help Sander if he doesn’t hit the ground running and takes a bit of time to recover from a horrendous injury.

Berge is probably the most gifted footballer I’ve seen for many years, problem is he is a violinist in a heavy metal band

We play with intensity pressure and a working class attitude

He will end up gliding his way around many a top ground over the years, just not for us
Perfect for Arsenal I would say

Norwood hasn’t hit the highs consistently enough this season, but when he does he is pivotal to what we do

Would love CW to find a way they can play effectively together, think we would need a Kante style to cover the hard yards and break up play
Easy to say, harder to find

Both good players in my mind. Both have dipped off in form and confidence. Anyone who can’t see the amount of potential in Berg that got a lot of the top clubs in Europe looking at him should go and watch rounders.

Berge has an attribute in his athleticism and ball carrying ability which you can’t teach it’s the thing which could separate him from his peers and make him elite. Norwood is currently playing at the peak of where his abilities can take him whereas Berge is nowhere near. Will Berge realise that potential? who knows but to give up on that kind of player will set a ceiling for us that we can’t break through.

Option C. Both.

Double pivot but with different responsibilities.

Norwood: sit, ping, bring the full backs into play, set pieces.

Berge: get possession and drive forward with Maguire-like runs.

As far as analogies go, this one is spot on, I’m now picturing Nigel Kennedy on stage with Anthrax.

Good point, well made.

I think that Lundstram is playing slightly nearer to Norwood in the last couple of games to provide a bit of protection and that has worked. I don’t have any stats to prove it - perhaps someone has?
