They thought back in 2011 we should be playing football the right way but more than 4 years later we are still in this division. I have always believed in winning football rather than "play in the right way" but decided to show more patience but the longer we have had this style, I find it harder. Wilson was unlucky in his first season, shouldnt have been sacked before the play offs, Weir was a disaster, Clough got us out of the mess but the following season he signed too many crocks, fell out with too many players and allegedly didnt bother practising on set-pieces, Adkins signings havent been that good (I had reservations about brining back Sharp -I remember Bergen Blade posting a thread on his thoughts about Sharp coming back to us and I agreed with him- but again I tried to show more patience and now my patience is getting thinner)

Playing the 'right way' is winning games...better players can play better football but sadly this bunch are unable to play at the higher tempo required to get out of this league...I think...maybe 2 or 3 could adapt..

There's a quote in that article about winning the battle first and then you can play. Yesterday's midfield had too many players with poor stamina/work rate/movement. Even though they have some ability, it's in vain if too many of them can't run.

We should be getting 60 goals from Adams/Sharp/Done, but we need to find a mobile, hard working midfield, combined with an effective playing style to make it happen.

When a midfield of Baxter, Coutts and Hammond is selected, is it because the management...

a) think these players do possess the required work rate/movement/stamina?
b) don't think the mentioned attributes are important in today's football?

Or

c) we're trying to be the pioneers who introduce the football world to the slow, lazy midfield which doesn't attack or defend

It's common sense and the best teams in the country have athletic hard-working defensive/sitting midfielders.

You can play good passing football in any league. You can't without a strong dominant Centre Back or a Defensive midfielder who spends the majority of the game breaking up attacks, tackling, and getting in the opposition's faces.

The last time we had one it was Doyle and he was on his way out when we signed him.

Indeed - the increased in tempo 2nd half v Fleetwood was significant - they couldn't live with us culminating in 2 nicely worked goals - primarily down to fast moving, incisive football.

We can do it - so is it the coaching that makes us so pedestrian most of the time?

Whilst I accept you can't do it for 90 minutes, there needs to be a leader on the pitch who orchestrates the style and tempo.

People keep telling me it's Baxter........bollox is my answer.

Not him again! He isnt what we need to get us out of this division. He was with us in the relegation season plus the 4 years we were in this level

I think what Robbie is meaning is that Doyle was on his way out when we signed him from Coventry - in other words we shouldn't have signed him at all.

Bergen - it is very difficult to know what the present management is thinking.

Adkins and staff are still searching for a way of making these players play - all are failing.

The only thing left is a 5 in midfield - quite alien to Adkins.

What we have to start doing is not losing games like Millwall and Crewe to name but 2.

I'm past caring about the style of football we play at the moment. I'd be happy with a style similar to Stoke under Pulis or Bolton under Allardyce if it meant winning most weeks.

The way Adkins was talking in his interview on Thursday, he was talking about Hammond in those terms ("dynamic", "energetic", etc) - thing is, is he talking about the 32 year old Hammond he's got now, or the guy who led Southampton to promotion from this division a few years back?

Got to hope (rather than expect) that the rusty Hammond still has got the drive & energy to be that missing link in our pedestrian midfield. Or else??

It's weird, Fleetwood looked poor ( we made them look poor!?!?) but they turned Burton over 4-0 in the previous match...that's my one hope left for the season..the league is so irratic that we 'could' still go up...if only we were 'United' and started playing better more consistently.

Mr Adkins, over to you...

UTB!

The only way to go up is because we were head and shoulders above the rest of the Division, not by virtue of the fact that the rest of the teams performances were equally inept.
Can you imagine the total humiliation of being a Sheffield United supporter, if this current crop of players somehow managed to stumble their way into the Championship. Doesn't bear thinking about, I'd rather stay where we are :(

Yeah..I suppose you'd expect your contract to be renewed if you did get the club promoted...wouldn't you!?!?

Frightening stuff...
