Talent is there for sure. But coming directly from the Swedish league with the expectations (due to transfer sum paid etc.) was always going to be difficult.
It's was a "paying good money for potential"-investment a lot of clubs do and have a 3-5 year plan for the player. I think we thought he would be good enough to start every weekend in the PL...

I do not agree with selling him as I think we could have loaned him out and monitored him as we had another two years to go on his contract. Now, we have sold him on for less than we paid and Basel will surely be able to get good offers if he goes on like this. Anyone knows who is responsible for this transfer and what the plan was, if there was any? Could the club comment on it, transparency towards the supporters etc.? Would be interesting to hear.

We had to let the players go that we did to enable the signings we made.

So the question is: who left that, had they stayed, would have made a bigger impact than someone we brought in?

The only player I really wish we'd kept hold of was Oli McBurnie.
I'd probably trade O'Hare for him.

Other than that, it was a fantastic window really. We're 3 or 4 light, but the business we did do (incomings & outgoings) was great.

Benie Traore might have done OK, but Tyrese Campbell on a free offers way more upside.

Scoring today actually

As well as scoring twice in the previous match.

In fact scored 4 in his last 4

Basel 2nd and Benie likely playing European football next season tbf.
Shamrock Rovers ‘play in Europe’ almost every season. It doesn’t mean Benie Traore isn’t a poor footballer and we were wrong to get rid of him.

That wasn't what I was meaning, I was meaning Benie will be happy as larry as gets to start week in week out, score regularly and likely play in European competitions.

I’m glad he’ll be happy, as long as he’s not playing for us I’m not really that fussed how he does though.

There’s always that media slant of ‘playing European football’ as if it’s somehow the pinnacle when in reality most of the games wouldn’t be up to League One level.

Same with the World Club Cup. Some clubs in there that would stink out the Championship yet for Representation sake Infanto will have you believe it is somehow the ‘Top 32’ clubs. If that was the case at least a third of the 32 would could from the Premier League alone.

I don’t mind the novelty of European football but the desire to present it as pinnacle of Competition when it could be Basle vs Ludgorets grates on my gears!

I think he'd have thrived in this formation as either cover or a potential starter on the wings
The improvement of Souza should teach us not to be too rash when judging players from last season's disaster. Traore also looked improved and stronger in pre season and it would have been very interesting to see if he could have added a threat from left wing. But I think the decision had already been made and Wilder needed to sell someone to make other signings.

I do think it's pretty funny there's Benie diehards who refuse to admit he was woefully short of what English football requires

Harsh. He's only 21. Should have been brought in an loaned out to the Championship but because of the owner we had to throw him in straight away. There's something there. It wouldn't surprise me if he has a decent career.

If he’d scored that chance vs Forest in the first away game of last season he would’ve fired us to safety.

Looking back at statements like:

Doesn't it make you want to be a little less harsh in your assessments? ;)
Souza has been as dramatic a change as any player. I remember when Coutts wasn't rated highly ..turns out Wilder worked his magic again 😉

Benie would have to be just as dramatic a change. To get what we reportedly did for him is amazing business.

It's amazing business to someone who doesn't appreciate the level of the PL and how bad it can make very good players look.

If he was any good he wouldn't be going from the Swedish league (where he played more than the premier league) indirectly to the Swiss league which is hardly a internationally renowned league.

Do you doubt that I can find players that have gone on to have top careers via that sort of path?
