Away days

The MK Dons promotion party was incredible. Surreal walking down for a piss at half time finding the concourse full of pyros and that lad singing on the rafters.

One of my favourites was the Millwall 2-1 away win in our promotion season under Wilder. I think that’s potentially the most I’ve ever drank in my life. My mate was living in Maidenhead at the time in a flat. We stopped at his. Started with a spoons breakfast and a few Guiness at 8 am. Headed in to London on the train which he got us 1st class with free beers for nowt being a train driver. Once we got to London we hopped off the tube at every stop and found a pub and had a couple and then continued on our journey. Found a cool boozer called the ship and shovel which is the same pub but on different sides of the road connected by a tunnel. United won 2-1 the atmosphere was class as we came back from 1 down late ish on. It wasn’t particularly intimidating at we’d gone down in big numbers and were loud. Hit a few pubs on the way back. Mate promised us a really good Chinese was just a quick walk from his we ended up walking over a ploughed field in the pitch black to find it. Was good though. Then a couple of whiskies back at the flat at about 1 am and the worst hangover ever the next day. Pre children trip.

Macclesfield 1 Blades 2 at Moss Rose in the first round of the Carling Cup in 2003. Match was shit, but it was a proper old ground, I went with some mates from work (we all lived in Manchester at the time) and I recall some of the rowdier lot on the uncovered stand shouting “show us yer clout” as passing women on the street, which was the height of sophisticated bants to the 24-year-old me.

That doesn’t make sense as he finished that season with us and started the next?
Update?!?!
Looking at fixture / records The pint with Cotterill must (may ?) have been at Luton in League Cup (Oct 86) - a game I have absolutely no recollection of, albeit that’s not especially unusual as evidenced by my (false) anecdote about Watford

That sounds about right doesn't it?

He pissed off around autumn 85

I’ve done hundreds over the year but the two that stand out are Bouncing Day and Bashams Arriving.

Another one that stands out was Middlesborough away in the 1994/95 season. Absolutely belted it down with rain, was on an open end away end and I went as part of a group of fledging away day Chapeltown Blades. We was all 16/17 years old and loved it.

My lad is going to Blackburn away with his mates in a few weeks. 4 of them, all 15 years old. First time away watching the Blades. A group of them did Bridlington Town and Cleethorpes Town last season watching Sheffield FC but that was on international break and it was a mixed group of young Blades and Owls. I’ve got a few reservations about him going to Blackburn but sooner or later we’ve got to cut the cord and he’s been away shitloads with me, so I know he’ll know what the crack is and how to behave.

You must’ve drank a fair bit because that one finished 3-2. 😉

But yeah that was a cracking day out in the capital. Late comeback, excellent scenes in the away end and Blades taking over London Bridge station in full voice afterwards.

Ipswich play off semi in 97- long way expecting nothing sun setting on their new stand, injuries, tarricho, katchuro, last minute stuff.

Northampton cracking boozers before hurried taxi into ground on mates tickets in their section scougall on hotdogs at half time on pitch at full

Crewe first game on own and on football special too. Jeff king winner. Thought my puberty had stopped as I was a solo away blade sans father

Sunderland Clayton 2 goals. Day trip from Kent more hours on train than pub or ground but win was worth it

Scunthorpe first experience of scrapping and it was that bird in white top leading them. ? Wasn’t big Brenda was it ?

Manor ground our lasses only experience of United- I’m not coming here again it’s cold and wet and full of men

Gillingham. Simply the worlds worst football bogs and after an aggressive curry most certainly the most welcome until your eyes open and you see where you’re sat.

Basham arriving in that cold wet weather with Deano getting all the crap chants. Arrived kings cross still wet but with one big smile.

Etc

Charlton 1-1, L1 promotion season
Give it to Ebanks Landell

Even their 90th min equaliser didn't spoil it too much. We had Wilder, we finally had an actual defender in EEL, and we knew we were going up

So it did, I was absolutely bolloxed

I seem to remember going berserk for Duffy and Didzy combining for a winner
