Away days

The MK Dons promotion party was incredible. Surreal walking down for a piss at half time finding the concourse full of pyros and that lad singing on the rafters.

One of my favourites was the Millwall 2-1 away win in our promotion season under Wilder. I think that’s potentially the most I’ve ever drank in my life. My mate was living in Maidenhead at the time in a flat. We stopped at his. Started with a spoons breakfast and a few Guiness at 8 am. Headed in to London on the train which he got us 1st class with free beers for nowt being a train driver. Once we got to London we hopped off the tube at every stop and found a pub and had a couple and then continued on our journey. Found a cool boozer called the ship and shovel which is the same pub but on different sides of the road connected by a tunnel. United won 2-1 the atmosphere was class as we came back from 1 down late ish on. It wasn’t particularly intimidating at we’d gone down in big numbers and were loud. Hit a few pubs on the way back. Mate promised us a really good Chinese was just a quick walk from his we ended up walking over a ploughed field in the pitch black to find it. Was good though. Then a couple of whiskies back at the flat at about 1 am and the worst hangover ever the next day. Pre children trip.

Macclesfield 1 Blades 2 at Moss Rose in the first round of the Carling Cup in 2003. Match was shit, but it was a proper old ground, I went with some mates from work (we all lived in Manchester at the time) and I recall some of the rowdier lot on the uncovered stand shouting “show us yer clout” as passing women on the street, which was the height of sophisticated bants to the 24-year-old me.

That doesn’t make sense as he finished that season with us and started the next?
Update?!?!
Looking at fixture / records The pint with Cotterill must (may ?) have been at Luton in League Cup (Oct 86) - a game I have absolutely no recollection of, albeit that’s not especially unusual as evidenced by my (false) anecdote about Watford

That sounds about right doesn't it?

He pissed off around autumn 85

I’ve done hundreds over the year but the two that stand out are Bouncing Day and Bashams Arriving.

Another one that stands out was Middlesborough away in the 1994/95 season. Absolutely belted it down with rain, was on an open end away end and I went as part of a group of fledging away day Chapeltown Blades. We was all 16/17 years old and loved it.

My lad is going to Blackburn away with his mates in a few weeks. 4 of them, all 15 years old. First time away watching the Blades. A group of them did Bridlington Town and Cleethorpes Town last season watching Sheffield FC but that was on international break and it was a mixed group of young Blades and Owls. I’ve got a few reservations about him going to Blackburn but sooner or later we’ve got to cut the cord and he’s been away shitloads with me, so I know he’ll know what the crack is and how to behave.

You must’ve drank a fair bit because that one finished 3-2. 😉

But yeah that was a cracking day out in the capital. Late comeback, excellent scenes in the away end and Blades taking over London Bridge station in full voice afterwards.

The problem nowadays is that only the same people with millions of points can go to away matches !. Being able to go as a treat say for a grandson ect .or when you find you have the opportunity to go ... its impossible .
And this is why the loyalty points system needed a bigger overhaul

Ipswich play off semi in 97- long way expecting nothing sun setting on their new stand, injuries, tarricho, katchuro, last minute stuff.

Northampton cracking boozers before hurried taxi into ground on mates tickets in their section scougall on hotdogs at half time on pitch at full

Crewe first game on own and on football special too. Jeff king winner. Thought my puberty had stopped as I was a solo away blade sans father

Sunderland Clayton 2 goals. Day trip from Kent more hours on train than pub or ground but win was worth it

Scunthorpe first experience of scrapping and it was that bird in white top leading them. ? Wasn’t big Brenda was it ?

Manor ground our lasses only experience of United- I’m not coming here again it’s cold and wet and full of men

Gillingham. Simply the worlds worst football bogs and after an aggressive curry most certainly the most welcome until your eyes open and you see where you’re sat.

Basham arriving in that cold wet weather with Deano getting all the crap chants. Arrived kings cross still wet but with one big smile.

Etc

Charlton 1-1, L1 promotion season
Give it to Ebanks Landell

Even their 90th min equaliser didn't spoil it too much. We had Wilder, we finally had an actual defender in EEL, and we knew we were going up

So it did, I was absolutely bolloxed

I seem to remember going berserk for Duffy and Didzy combining for a winner

'Bouncing day' and 'Basham arriving' stand out for me in terms of football and excitement but yesterday in Leicester was enjoyable in many ways and the football (+ result) was a bonus.

The day started with a cold damp 10 minute walk to the station and ended with a drenching on my return. I joined the Derby to Leicester train which was very overcrowded due to a non - running train. I engaged in conversation with a non-football couple who were going to Leicester for a weekend break. The wife was very disgruntled that this was the second time they had been involved with an overcrowded train full of football fans and couldn't sit in their allocated reserved seats but her husband told an inspiring account of his dealing with prostate cancer as we stood in a first class carriage.

Arriving in Leicester I set off walking to the ground and ended up walking with a Leicester fan with whom I had an interesting conversation - I wondered what the stadium I saw was and he told me it was Leicester Tigers' stadium - also to keep that on the left on the way back to the station. Standing in the concourse prior to the match i had a chat with someone I'd never seen before and we ended up in the safe standing together.

Walked back to the station afterwards and got talking to another lone fan with whom I had a conversation on the way back to Sheffield. From then onwards I was by myself on the train back to Leeds and then back home.

This a long winded way of saying it's good to have an away day where there were plenty of conversations to be had. I always have a group of friends to sit with at home matches, but being a lone wolf at away games (along with plenty of others) it's not unusual to go the whole day and hardly talk to anyone. Yesterday was a great exception to the norm and I thoroughly enjoyed it - apart from the drenching at the end of the day!

Yesterday was my most enjoyable away day since we were in the Premier League (20/21) Great game, goals, nervous finish then the relief at winning. So many away games in recent times have been tense dull games, hopefully we are going to continue with the attacking play.

Possibly the same train I caught. It left Sheffield at 9:01 and went via Derby. Train was absolutely snided and 1st class had been declassified to relieve the congestion.

As I live in Leicester , it should've been a simple bike ride from where I live to the KP stadium, but I happened to be in Sheffield so took the train to Leicester!

I was at the game on my own, so it was good to enjoy friendly conversation with the Blades around me. I also had a chance encounter with some forum footy mates and an old schoolmate from 40+ years ago.

Great atmosphere at the game, which was really enjoyable, but a bit of a nervy finish!

Has to be H*llsborough 92.
After we’d won at the Lane this was now going to be “their time” What they were going to do to us blah blah blah (to be honest they had a good side)
Anyway, stood in the open corner, getting rained on for 90 minutes and never feeling a drop!!!
The walk up Herries Road to the car was priceless.
Bobby. Bobby, Bobby Davison!!!

Mine was the 10.33 from Derby so it must have been chaotic on more than one train :(

I'm sure there's been similar threads I've posted in before, but for me it's:

MK Dons promotion party
West Brom with the Kieran Dowell winner in the PL promotion season
Everton in our last PL season had great gallows humour, shit game but am good friends with a couple of STHs of theirs so made for a decent day ignoring result
Charlton in the Ebanks-Landell season was fun

Nice to see you Maz.

Are Chap Blades still a thing?
