My uncle still talks about that match in the 1971-72 season when Best scored.

It was at a time when no one ever bought tickets in advance.
It's was simply first come first serve. Get in early or risk getting locked out.

He tells me United must have took 12,000 to Old Trafford but the gates were locked with "sold out" signs.
So they had no choice but to listen to the match on the radio whilst sat in the coach.

I estimate a crowd of about 24,000 as most of the Notlob fans will be at Spalding seeing as they are going to the Sheffield match.
Could have given us the upper tier as well as the lower tier.
Best gate of the season at Spalding though.

I went with family by train. We, along with several thousand others, listened to radios for 75 minutes hearing how United were the better side, got into the ground for the last few minutes just before 'that' goal by Best. The rest is history.

Reading all this is doing my head in. Another huge crowd and I won't be there. Last Saturday the atmosphere and the performance were excellent. My 2 mates are doing my head in about going back over soon. Just wish I'd booked flights for this weekend well in advance. If you have the luxury of a ticket please enjoy it and play your part in making it a purposeful day.

Normally it's about 80, but it's like the trains - leave it to the last minute and they screw you. This crappy pricing model is destroying spontanuity.

Normally it's about 80, but it's like the trains - leave it to the last minute and they screw you. This crappy pricing model is destroying spontanuity.

That's the obvious problem with living a distance away. You need to plan your games well in advance and hope to avoid the dreaded rearrangement for TVs announcements. You also can not afford the luxury of picking your game based on recent results and the importance of the fixture.
