Can we sustain the same threads until the end of the International Break? Have the moaners got enough free time to keep it going?

Yes, there is an England game tonight to provide plenty of new/old/recycled material

Suppose that depends on your definition of skint and who we are measuring in relation to.

Yes.

Paper tissue business just a front so he can print his own money....

There is no question that he has money. The question is: how much of it we will get and when.

Nukehillsborough posted this quote from Jim Phipps facebook page earlier today on Bladesmad.

Read it, not a lot more to be said tbh.

I am trying to wrap my head around this thread: Here is what I see, just since the end of last season: 11 permanent signings; 6 extensions; no player sell off; no panic buying; focussed, purposeful talent recruitment; no debt; financial strength to do what we want without borrowing; capital investment at BDTBL; new desso pitch funded & scheduled; an outstanding gaffer and an equally outstanding front office MD; a new and much improved commercial department; great new kit sponsor with the most successful kit sales in memory; one key player sold, but only because he demanded to be allowed to go; a gaffer empowered to spend proceeds of that sale as he sees fit; unity in the board room; unity in the clubhouse; and, for the most part, unity in the terraces. It is true we are not wasteful in our spending. We are calculated, cautious and even cuthroat in guarding the treasury. Does all that add up to "Same owd"? I don't know. The people who say nothing has been spent have no idea how many millions of pounds have gone in to making their club viable in the years ahead. Last season featured expensive management changes on & off pitch, expensive player buy outs, the paying off of old disputes and lawsuits, offloading 35 million pounds in debt, bringing in a load of players on permanents and loans, an historic undefeated run combined with a run of clean sheets unlike any in recent memory, a goal-rich FA Cup Semi Final appearance at Wembley, and a second half climb from the bottom of the table to almost making it into the playoffs. There are more great things in store for us this season. We are in a great spot. We are well backed. We are intent on promotion. Sure, there's more to do to ensure that outcome. Plenty more. But we are on task and have more reasons to be positive than negative.

As usual, sounds great Jim, but....

The small line about us selling a player, that we didn't have to according to him, for £2,500,000 is skipped over. Leaving a certain irony that we then couldn't afford any of our 3 targets.

I know fans demand communication, but our situation ( whch after 40 years of crap, I'm ok with) continues to lag the rhetoric at a disappointing rate.

Eventually it comes wrapped with a whiff of bullshit.

There is a difference between not being willing to pay the demanded price and not being able to afford them.

Eh? He says "one key player sold, but only because he demanded to be allowed to go; a gaffer empowered to spend proceeds of that sale as he sees fit" - hardly skipped over.

Depends on your perspective. Given the perspective that he's replying to a general disappointment with our transfer activity, I think it's woefully skipped over.

You are entitled to disagree.

[FATTYFOULKE's posting ... ]

It all sounds wonderfully rosy, doesn't it?

Except the truth of the fact that we are still in division fucking three, and on recent performances (because they are our only reference point, not how everything looks surrounding the main issues) we don't look anywhere near capable of securing and maintaining a top two spot. Dress it all up as much as you want. We need a 20 per season striker, someone who can knock in 15-17 just behind him and a fairly cohesive defensive set up. The back four looks shakey in places, the midfield isn't setting fire to the pitch and the attack may as well be still in the dressing room.

Cluff isn't the problem. Optimism in the face of shortcomings is.

Every team needs a 20+ goal a season striker.
Buying a 'name' player doesn't guarantee they will score the goals.
The midfield needs to create the chances for said player to score in the first place.
If we create the chances then even a striker/forward with the qualities of Laurent D'jaffo could score 20 over a season.
One exceptional player cannot win games on his own they still need the other 10 to work as a team with them.

This is a tired old discussion. It's clear and present that millions have been positively and proactively invested in the club since the prince took over, I don't see how anyone can fail to see that. What did you expect, Mourinho as gaffer with Ronaldo and Messi up front? The amount of money spent is sensible and realistic, in line with the demands and expectations of a club at our level. Which is 3rd tier. That's 3rd tier players, 3rd tier tactics and 3rd tier psychology. What will it take for you doubters to be happy? We're in such a charmed position it's unreal.

I've gone along with our inability to buy a (relatively) top striker since we surrendered our last title challenge. The combination of game changing investment, million pound plus cup runs, record season ticket and shirt sales, and the recouping of £2.5M from another (albeit "forced") sale of our best talent - all celebrated by Jim himself in his post - make the patience start to wear thin.

Sorry fella, but it's far from clear to me that millions have been invested.

I have a history of arguing against those who demand the spending of money we haven't got. Right now, I don't accept it.

The oft repeated "11 players signed" is a smokescreen in my opinion, given that 3 were already here, several more have left, including one for many times over what was initially outlayed for those signings.

I can't understand the anger at perceived failings at the club.
Maybe I'm not as big a blade as some, maybe it's apathy, maybe I am just more accepting of how the world works as I get older.

I just cannot get my head around the overwhelming dismay of some people to a football club not signing a player on a day that a media company has decided to hype up beyond it's actual worth.

Could someone explain to me simply without the subjective thoughts on boards, budgets or such, why? After all there are a lot more subjects worthy of the fire & brimstone.
