Isn't it to do with the tractor towing the 'plough' ? You plough up and down the pitch as close to the Kop as the turning circle of the tractor will allow and having done that, you plough the end straight across from the South Stand to the John Street Stand.

Its a similar principle to leaving a margin between a wall and the lawn called a 'mowing strip' because the blades of the mower aren't right up to the edge or the front of said 'Suffolk Punch' or whatever....

They tend to move the pitch round a bit most years.

With all the problems they had on the South Stand touchline (the Somme) this year, they might just be shifting the playing surface further towards John Street.

One request for the OCD amongst us.... can the halfway line actually line up with the halfway point of John Street this year?

Don't you think a lot of the problems with the pitch in front of the New Stand :D were caused by having the 'practice goals' there before KO? It really gives the pitch a hammering.

Oh, and quite agree about having the halfway line in line with...Seats 93.

I was gonna ask why they go to the trouble of re-doing all that lot, but can't be arsed to do the last bit where the touchline is.
But it appears i have the answer, in that they're moving the pitch a bit. Still weird though. Why not take the lot up, will look daft having a nice new pitch and tatty old bits round the side?

And another - will there be any attempt to level it? It currently slopes down towards the John Street/Bramall Lane corner flag...

No,I happen to be ITK on this matter...its all to do with the wire on the mower not being long enough to reach certain parts of the pitch ....
:p
