Are we at fault for not being able to sign players?

Why would you need to make such a guarantee to someone like Marriott? The lure of SUFC should be enough and if it wasn’t, CW wouldn’t be bothered anyway. The player himself would know that if he came and did well, either United would go up or he’d be in the shop window for the Prem anyway. Club would only be spiting itself by taking all the risk, for no reward if/when the player inevitably moved on

What South Bucks is saying is a good idea in principle. To put it in its simplest terms, if a player does well (i.e. score 20 goals) but the club doesn't, then the club can give him assurances that he can leave. The fee should be no less than what we paid plus his wages for the year. If we go up he stays. The club cannot lose out this way. If it's the only way we can attract players then why not? We'd also get to see a lot more of the said player than we have done of Walker and Brooks, to mention but two.

The media and fans are not privy.

It’s the club and / or agent that usually blabs first that gets it in to the public domain.

Wilder does right to stick to his valuation and move on.

UTB

Quite right. If we matched Derby's offer of £8m, it would immediately go up to £10m. Anyway, is there any proof of this '£8m bid' or is it just coming from Ipswich and/or Waghorn's agent? Rather like an ebay auction where it doesn't matter how many times you up your bid, it miraculously gets gazumped.

It's a bit rich (some) people having a go at CW over this, over on 'Rumour Mill' there's 64 pages - started on March 12, 2017 - about Waghorn. Are we to blame? Let it go re. Waghorn. He's decent, not fucking Neymar.

So I'm the only one who thinks that £5 or 5.5 million is way over the top for a quick but poor finisher who has only had two decent seasons in the Championship?
Even if he was under contract!
It was basically saying there is absolutely no one better than him with any lower division club, anywhere!

What it has done is put up all the prices for anyone we do sign. Can't plead poverty when bidding this (to me ridiculous) amount.
And with such limited options up front let alone a desperate need for both pace and good finishing.

Plus what do these signings do to the wages structure? Or are we now playing all our better players decent championship wages? Would explain the losses claimed.

Delighted we got Mcgoldrick (spelin) instead of him to be honest.

They will have had an eye on him just as we did, for the benefits he provides for a team. I doubt that Derby never wanted him but had a read of S24SU and The Star and thought to offer more just to piss us off.
I don't think Lampard had ever heard of him until he read his name on the rumours board.

Players we compete for will occasionally be beyond our reach. Purely due to finance.
It's not a lack of ambition just we have a multi millionaire who can't compete with billionaires. It's why us mere mortals buy Ford focuses instead of Aston Martin's as family cars

Let's just hope and pray our 13m offer for the return of Conor Sammon doesn't become public knowledge

Apparently Wilder has been chasing Waghorn for 2 months and was dismayed when the news became public.

If true, then as soon as fans and the media knew about Waghorn being a transfer target now seems to cause other teams to try and steal them off us under our noses.

Like we all know, Wilder likes to do his transfer business quietly and sometimes pulls off signings where you think "how has he managed that without anybody knowing?" (Blackman, Henderson) No doubt other clubs were hugely interested in Blackman and Henderson before we signed him... maybe having no one know about them being targets has helped us sign them ahead of other teams?

If the news of us being linked and bidding £5m then caused Derby to be willing to spend £8m to sign him, then is that the media and the fans' fault for making the news public?
A well known phenomenon especially in politics.
In this case we were the "stalking horse" that alerted other predators :(

I've got a spare three million so that we could have met Ispwich's valuation but my fax machine broke down.

Sorry.
