Are we at fault for not being able to sign players?

Apparently Wilder has been chasing Waghorn for 2 months and was dismayed when the news became public.

If true, then as soon as fans and the media knew about Waghorn being a transfer target now seems to cause other teams to try and steal them off us under our noses.

Like we all know, Wilder likes to do his transfer business quietly and sometimes pulls off signings where you think "how has he managed that without anybody knowing?" (Blackman, Henderson) No doubt other clubs were hugely interested in Blackman and Henderson before we signed him... maybe having no one know about them being targets has helped us sign them ahead of other teams?

If the news of us being linked and bidding £5m then caused Derby to be willing to spend £8m to sign him, then is that the media and the fans' fault for making the news public?

Nope.

Everybody in football talks to everybody else anyway and Waghorn's agent is hardly going to keep a lid on it when he might get a better deal for his player.

Wouldn't be at all surprised if his agent put it out there to stir up interest.

Our only problem is not having a barrel of money to fund the ridiculous wage levels some clubs pay.

It’s usually the selling club that makes it public. Generally there’s not much you can do to avoid it.

The media and fans are not privy.

It’s the club and / or agent that usually blabs first that gets it in to the public domain.

Wilder does right to stick to his valuation and move on.

No, he openly admitted we had a offer in for him last week.

Bit of both I'd say. We want news and we want it now, even if it's spurious news. The media feed that need, supply and demand.

We are no different in that when we sold Brooks there was a gap of many days between the £12 m rumour and him signing which looks like an advert to other clubs to beat the offer if they want to.
Do wonder if we should be more creative with contracts as in tell someone like Marriott you'll be on middling wages but if you score 20 goals in a season you can leave at the end of the season for the fee we paid for you.

Bits and pieces I`ve heard suggest that Derby are adopting a Pigs style wage structure which, as we are all aware, is a dangerous game.

I recently spoke to someone who works at Derby and he tells me the owner has massively cut back his financial investement. This has meant approx 30% of all staff (first team, academy, support & admin) have been cut.

Fat Frank will be on a nice wedge and has brought in Pep's previous right hand man, who will also not be living on crumbs.

I really can't see them chucking around £30k/week wage offers and maybe players like Waghorn are more realistic for them too.

They will have had an eye on him just as we did, for the benefits he provides for a team. I doubt that Derby never wanted him but had a read of S24SU and The Star and thought to offer more just to piss us off.

The have the Rumours Board set as their favourites saves on scouting costs

I don't think it matters who knows or not, It all comes down to the brass tax

Absolutely our fault.
Fat Fucker Frank had never even heard of any none prem players until he came on here to check on his most feared opponent from the past, just to make sure his lads wouldn't be going to have to come up against him this season.
Went through the rumours and BANG, we'll have a pop at those he thinks.

It’s actually all my fault...I was in the pub the with a couple of Derby mates talking about Waghorn and they must have told Lampard about him...bastards that they are...

Told the lads on our whatsapp group it was a done deal and that scuppered it. All gone down hill since then :(

What United could do is play Ipswich at their own game. Withdraw the offer and tell Derby that they are not competing with our bid. They will then reconsider their offer to Ipswich unless they are dumb enough to bid against themselves.

OK we end up without Waghorn, which looks to be dead in the water anyway, but it restores a bit of sanity to the proceedings.

Perhaps wilder also knew that if the Waghorn bid was leaked it might push other clubs into making a decision on their strikers that we have bids in for and it might also divert media attention away from those deals being gazumped.

Personally I’d like to see us get a decent player in for a reasonable fee without entering a bidding war we’ll never win

Is anyone else confused ?

They might be still splashing on players` wages as opposed to the non-playing staff, and most likely can comfortably outbid us on that score, never mind the upfront fees. Leave `em to it I say. In CW we trust.

Sorry what?
My guess is many league one strikers would like to see a championship club as hopefully a short stepping stone to the riches of the premiership and in which case structure a deal which suits them big time a year from now. They know if they score 20 for us a premier club will be after them and offer great riches to them and they can then effectively chose the highest wage payer. 20 goals for us would make a huge difference for basically the cost of wages. Repeat again and again.

Why would you need to make such a guarantee to someone like Marriott? The lure of SUFC should be enough and if it wasn’t, CW wouldn’t be bothered anyway. The player himself would know that if he came and did well, either United would go up or he’d be in the shop window for the Prem anyway. Club would only be spiting itself by taking all the risk, for no reward if/when the player inevitably moved on

Clearly the lure of sufc is not enough for many players this summer as the evidence suggests which is why it might be time for a less traditional approach or we end up with nowt or retirees.
