Was about to say the same. Harry was looking for a RB and some one mentioned CW at Southampton - please correct me if I'm wrong, as usual.
THE day at Leicester, Wilder gave their player some grief as he ran the ball out of play, just in front of us. Bad sportsmanship, but we're all Blades.
Bumped into Dave Bassett very briefly on two occasions. But it was obvious he was a good bloke and someone you would respect, a genuine leader.
UTB

Wasn't Wilder brought in by McEwan?

Happy birthday Dave harry Bassett.
A true blades legend as a manager.
He gave me so many happy memories as a blade approaching his twenties. We were a club staring into the abyss but he pulled us back from the brink a little bit like our Chris is doing now!!. I’m not sure whether harry will ever understand the estime we hold him in although he did get a little glimpse at filbert street.

Happy Birthday Harry. What Harry did for the club will be hard to mach and what he had to deal with in terms of the boardroom problems made his achievements even more remarkable and on a shoestring.

I think Wilder arrived in 1986. He'd been a ball boy at the Lane in the late 1970s and you can see him on the Match of the Day footage when we played Oxford and beat them 3-1.
Any link to the footage?

Bits of the Oxford footage were on the old Match of the Day video but not that bit. They showed a clip on a Football Focus profile of Wilder a bit back. I have the full footage which I'm going to put into an extended video for the 1979/1980 season sometime.

Man was and should always be a legend to us. People easily forget the state of our club when he took over. He could avoid the drop that first season but how well he made up for it the following season. Then promotion to the first division in what was almost a dream. The man and his players gave us dignity after years of being under the filth. He gave us a team and club to be proud of and was only derailed by typical SUFC stupidity in selling for short term gain.

He saved us and gave us hope. It is all I ever asked from a Manager.

Happy Birthday one Davey Bassett. There’s only one Davey Bassett.

Who is the zone man?!!

Was all happening when I was in my teens/early twenties, in my die hard go home and away football is everything days. Thanks for the great memories DB much love!

Dave Basset performed wonders on next to nothing to rescue United from oblivion. His contribution to our club can never ever be underestimated. A top bloke too.
Apart from Pinchy, who's massively tongue in cheek anyway...Dave had plenty of detractors towards the end of his tenure at the Lane.
To see how the "crowd" turned on him in his last game (Huddersfield?) was one of the saddest days I've experienced at Bramall Lane.
Football crowds can be nasty, fickle, short memoried bastards....

Yes, against Hudderfield it was particularly sad.

He had come to the end of his time with us and I think all knew it, including him. He was mentally and emotionally knackered after being at the Lane for about 7 years and having bad to endure all the political in fighting at boardroom level and his best players getting flogged from underneath him.

That match v Huddersfield was very unpleasant in the stands though and I can remember many a Blade v Blade physical confrontation about Bassett. He didn't deserve to get all the abuse that came his way that day, not after everything he had done for us. I have always been proud to call myself a Blade, no matter where I have been in the world (and I've been to a lot of places and talked football with a lot of non Sheffielders..), however that day was one of the few times that i have been genuinely embarrassed for a lot of the SUFC fans.

A bad day. Still, it's all history, and we have alot of bright and happy days in front of us with our current top top manager

There was an article in the paper the other day about Samantha Kane, a name from the Basset era, who has gone from a he to she to he and back to a she again:confused:. An illustration as to what Dave was up against in those days. Luckily we didn't get a mention in the story.
