For most clubs, their fans would treat DB like royalty for what he did for their club when it was truly on its arse.

Some of us remember exactly what he did for us and will be eternally grateful for turning our club around from near catastrophe and giving us some pride back again.

Whilst some self loving dimwits on here just talk out their arse ad infinitum.

Happy birthday DB. A true club legend.

Bassett was a legend, he’s still a honary Blade and deserves full respect.
For the younger generation that weren’t around the best way to describe it was

Our managers before Bassett in the 80’s were like Jos Lukehy at S6, interviews were monotone and boring, no passion and similiar stuff said post match regardless of whether we won or lost.

Then in comes this London boy called Dave Bassett and immediately he talks like a fan.
He’s passionate, talks just like Wilder, talks about players must want to play for SU.
Bassett talked about he’d rather have less talented players that will give 110% effort to SU then a mercenary talented player.
He quickly built up a bond between the players- manager and fans, all of a sudden we were “United”.

I used to love listening to Bassetts post match interview, they were ultra honest and interesting, he spoke like a fan.
And would boil with anger after poor displays, criticise his players and apologise to the fans.

Watching Chris Wilder in action brings back memories of Dave Bassett.
Although of course Wilders football is much better, Bassett played percentage football similar to Warnocks style.

I started school just after Boxing Day and we dropped into the 4th as I started to understand who supported who.

Watching us get back under Porterfield and then the boredom of McKewan convinced me that success was something other clubs had and we just got to hear or read about. That and that all Wednesdayites are wankers.

Then came Bassett. My mid to late teens saw us reach heights I’d never dreamed of. We kicked seven shades out of the pigs and whilst we didn’t have an attractive style, we had a spirit and attitude to be proud of.

Man of his time? Certainly. But what a fucking time we had.

The only manager in my Blades-supporting lifetime to get us into the top flight and not get relegated the following season. Oh and the 3-1 at Hllsborough could be my best Blades game ever. Have a good un Arry.

Agree, again it’s all about context, which the younger ones might not understand.

In 1993 we were an average PL side, whereas Wednesday were one of the best teams in the PL.
When we played them in 1993 Wednesday has a realistic chance of winning the league.
Their fans were incredibly arrogant and were telling us how there’d be a repeat of the 4-0 Boxing Day result.
Inside most Blades were fearful we could get thrashed and we’d have accepted a draw.

However on the night we played the perfect away display (similarity to how Fleetwood beat us 2 years ago).
Wednesday dominated possession and had loads of attacks but we defended brilliantly so Wednesday hardly created a chance.
Whereas we didn’t attack much but cut their defence up every time and always looked dangerous.

The 3-1 away win meant so much because on the night we thoroughly deserved the win.
Even Wednesdayites admitted we deserved the win and their arrogance stopped for a few weeks.

Happy Brithday Mr. Bassett

A manager who literally saved the club from oblivion if he had not been appointed when he was we would have been back in the 4th division within a year or two and with no Brealey figure to step in during the late 80s early 90s recession we could have very easily done a Bradford Park Avenue

Attendances had dropped to under 8k we were on the brink.

Well said, that man - I like the cut of your jib..

Happy Birthday ‘Arry. Some fantastic times and one of your lads clearly picked up something from you given the way he’s managing our club right now!
Was about to say the same. Harry was looking for a RB and some one mentioned CW at Southampton - please correct me if I'm wrong, as usual.
THE day at Leicester, Wilder gave their player some grief as he ran the ball out of play, just in front of us. Bad sportsmanship, but we're all Blades.
Bumped into Dave Bassett very briefly on two occasions. But it was obvious he was a good bloke and someone you would respect, a genuine leader.
