Appalling performance

I'm not going to go with both feet here and lambast the side for tonights performance but it was by far and away the worst home performance we've turned in over the last couple of years, and certainly since the home game v Southend in the promotion season. I think after the last couple of years Wilder deserves a free hit, and tonight was it.

Too many players were'nt at the the races, Marvellous Marvin started well but tailed off badly. Baldock was bang average and showed my Freeman is the first choice, Norwood had a stinker, Fleck looked like he was lacking sharpness, and Washington was disappointing.

Too many poor performances right across the pitch, and we was fortunate to come away the draw.

I can see Wilders thinking, he was probably hoping that the lads who came in did well, and gave them a point to prove, and gave him a selection headache, but sadly it didn't come off

Baldock was dreadful tonight - mainly off the ball. He is RWB and yet when we were going forward on the left he was never wider than the 18 yard box - allowing them to be compact. His only cross of note was high and poor.

Freeman stays wide and hammers his crosses low onto the 6 yard box - incredibly difficult to defend and food for Billy to gobble up.

Interesting how the old guard of Freeman, Basham, JOC and Billy are leading the charge. The more recent arrivals just seem to expect things to happen.

Egan and Hendo are showing some passion. Olly was odd tonight - it was as though he had more power than usual as everything was going too long. Whatever you’re feeding him - stop!

The key tonight was the Irn Bru wizard - he always starts slowly after a break - the good news is that he will be on fire on Saturday.

Just a pause in the Magic

It was an absolutely typical Championship match. Regardless of league position, Birmingham are no mugs - there aren't any at this level. Preston will be the same.

We're often up against teams who cost £30, £40, £50m and last night was a collective 'bad day at the office' and it's pointless picking on individual players. The pace was often frenetic but both teams cried out for that extra bit of quality where it counts. Brum obviously did their homework and nullified us. This is what we wanted when we got out of Division One - games against skilled teams who won't roll over.

I wouldn't be too worried, by all accounts and going by "The View From" Brum have played much better than their league position suggests. Our boys cant turn it on every week, if they did, they certainly wouldn't be playing for us.

Contrast between Villa and Bolton performances and tonight was vast. Norwood played like Lee Evans but he did split their defence for our best chance which Baldock made a mess of. No creativity or spark up front. Defence was solid. Egan and Basham played well.

Brum had the best chances hit the post twice and came close another two times and finished stronger. But I still think we'll come good again. Leon has been off the boil for a long time. CW must be scratching his head. No answer to that one. Was hoping for a bit of creativity from Woodburn but it hasn't happened yet. However, we played poorly but got a point. Last year we were playing well and losing. Problem is upfront. We have a good keeper, defence and midfield.

You're not wrong there! I think we'll still be wheeling Clarke and Sharp out when they're in their 80's. It's been apparent now for the last couple of seasons that we need to recruit some "quality" strikers, Wilder's stated that clearly, but he hasn't got the funds to do it. So we have to try and make do with the likes of McGoldrick (who, no disrepect to the lad, I think he's doing well for us) and Washington (who on last night's performance looks clueless). These aren't the "quality" strikers that Wilder was referring to, and that's what's missing.

Over the last couple of seasons we've seen us outplay many a team and somehow manage to lose the game so it's refreshing that we've played rubbish and got something out of it. On to PNE now and we really could do with a win Inthis one.

teams like Brum are afraid of us and will come and park the bus.. we do better against the Villa's of the world because they come to win. i think Chris made a mistake for matching them with pace when actually we needed guile ie Sharp and McGoldrick.. we're going to have to get used to this this season. they know about us now. Teams will keep it tight because we are fast starters and if not held in check blow teams away. They wait until the 70th minute until Duffy comes off and then play from there. Johnson (Bristol manager) pretty much admitted as such after saturdays game.
Preston will come for the win. it will suit us better and be a completely different game ;)

I thought Lundstram had an excellent bench. I hope he has a silent chuckle following that performance on the basis that he would have been hard pushed to make it worse.
if he'd have come on we'd have lost! :D

I decided to pause for a bit before giving any sort of reaction to last night , yes it was a very disappointing performance , & not what we have come to expect , but at the end of the day , Brum proved that they can play a bit , & defended very well when they had too . All things considered after 90 minutes I was happy to have kept a clean sheet & scraped a point. There were too many players who didn't perform for us , I always think that you know what you are in for after the first 5 minutes with United , last night we were slow & sloppy from the start , giving the ball away & lacking any drive & intensity. An absolute opposite from the Villa game when you could see we were up for it and went at them from the beginning.

Bout time we got a draw for a shit performance

Yep, agree with this. If we can get a scruffy point after a shit show like this then another 5 points like this will make the difference between mid table last season and top 6 this season. I think Wilders got the message too. Last season we would have chucked a few attackers on, gone for broke and conceded a late goal. I can accept last nights result provided we don't make a habit of the performance.

It was under par and incredibly flat. Not sure 'appalling' is the right word.

Appalling was Hull away last season and the first 20 minutes v Boro a few weeks back.

Fleck wins more balls in the air than Leon but maybe it's his gloves weighing him down.

Side splitting joke aside, how would you explain the two defensive headers that Leon cleared last night, when Fleck was nowhere to be seen?

Hope your side gets better soon ISC, how do you explain his half hearted attempts during the rest of the game to win headers ?, I expect 100% effort for every ball he goes for not just a couple when he feels like it.

Totally disrespectful thread title.

Does anyone realise that Birmingham’s biggest defeat of the season is only 0-1 away at Middlesboro.
In that match they dominated Boro and deserved to win.
Brum fans still believe they are good enough to make the play-offs.

The post match comments remind me of the reaction from the Villa fans after we outclassed them.

The other week Villa fans were saying their defeat to us was one of their worse performances in years.
Many said how embarrassing it was to be played off the park by Sheff United, very few thought that maybe it was SU who were good on the day, few gave us any credit.

Last night we dominated midfield, had loads of corners and more attacks but struggled to break through their defense.

Instead of us being poor has anyone thought that maybe Birmingham have one of the best defences in this league? They have the 2nd best defence (behind Boro) in this league.
Has anyone thought that Birmingham have been very strong in every match they’ve played but struggle to put away their chances. They’ve only lost 2 matches all season todate.

Basically I’m saying it’s not just about our performance, you also have to consider the opposition performance.
Birmingham made it really tough and deserve credit and respect.

Yes, All this! Birmingham have some very good players. We didn't play as well in terms of giving the ball away, but Birmingham pressed us hard. And as Wilder said, did a good job on us. We didn't lose and it was not appalling! We are competing in the top half of the championship, and doing fine.

I would agree with that. I’ve seen a bit of brum on sky and they should have won both times.

Credit is rarely given to an opposing team, it’s always just that we were shit.

Weird how people are questioning Sharp and McGoldrick being left out, despite Norwood having his worst game for us by an absolute mile and the rest of the midfield being not much better - would they really have done much better than Clarke and Washington? I somewhat doubt it, and those that are going on about rest and just off the international break, we have quite an old strike force in the middle of a Sat-Wed-Sat-Sat-Wed-Sat run of games, 6 in 22 days, it's unrealistic to think the same 11 can play the full 90 throughout that

Because it gives so much pleasure to those who have things to get off their chest

That's hindsight.

We chose to drop our top scorer and play two forwards who haven't scored this season. Objectively, that was an odd thing to do, irrespective of how the game panned out.

It was like the QPR away game last year. Rotation for the sake of it.

Well they're not going to score if you never use them... Football has moved on from the days where you can win the league using 14 players

I agree with that, but I did not see a compelling case for dropping our top scorer - the only forward who has scored in open play. It was an unnecessary change.

And Clarke has played a lot, and not scored yet.
