I'm going to apologise before hand but although I loved every minute of last night and subsequently every minute of today as well, for the Blades now, it's pretty much "do or die" - automatic is in our hands and although i'm often optimistic, we've all been Blades long enough to know things aren't always that simple.

Now, if we do somehow mess up, surely confidence will be that low that even the play-offs will be a write off. This isn't putting a downer on things cus in the past 2 months we've not really put a foot wrong but it's just saying that automatic now, is more imprtant than ever, so lets just go about our own business, picking up 3 points consistently and get that 2nd place (forget 1st).

PS - I fucking hate Alan Lee!

I agree it's do or die now, but we shouldn't forget about first! If we win our games in hand, we're 8 points behind Charlton and 7 ahead of Hudders. Never mind worrying about the teams behind us, we should be aiming to knock down those 8 points! What's disappointing is that if we'd won at their place we'd be potentially 10 points clear and only 2 behind! :(

I know what you're saying but I just feel if we get carried away with ourselves, we could trip up - realise that the main job is Promotion and that people will be biting at our ankles if we slip up. Look too far forward and forget them behind could see us falter. It's that old saying "we scored to soon" which I suppose we did last night, but we still prevailed. Have we hit top form too early, can we prolong it to see us over the line?

Interestingly enough, for a club that is always supposed to "choke", I think the last season we were looking good for (automatic) promotion in February and ultimately failed was 1969-70. Apart from the seasons we went up (70-71, 81-82, 83-84, 88-89, 89-90, 05-06), the only other seasons were automatic promotion looked possible in Feb would be 79-80, 85-86 and 03-04, but on each occasion we were going through bad runs and had been dropping down the league since around December.

History is on our side :-)

History shows it's auto or nothing.

Great as last night was I'd like to see a bit more Blades-style pessimism about the derby. Falling into the trap of sounding off about stuffing them will come back to haunt us - remember it many times the other way round, early 90s springs to mind and we always did them as underdogs.

A draw against Preston and defeat at the pigs and the momentum could quickly swing back to them.

Not half.

I've been quietly enjoying watching us improve and perform as well as I can remember for an age but there's been no over confidence on show. However, now we've hit second and we've got a "magic number" thread and all the talk is of automatic and derby wins and the like. Much prefer to do it unoticed rather than shout it from the rooftops.

The thing about this season at S2 is we havnt been pulling up trees, scoring 6 goals, hammering all comers and had our manager claiming we are bigger than {insert diety of choice here} what we have done is get on with the job in hand, quietly and with some great support especially away from home, unlike the chaps at S6 who sem to have upset just about every team they play, we seem to be making friends and gaining acclaim wherever we go.
I personally think the derby win, lose or draw is NOT the decider for auto promotion any more than huddersfield was, what will decide it is keeping gaining wins and/or at least a point in as many games as possible not games this far from end of the season, tho a good boost for confidence beating wendy and udders will not be the deciding factor, so keep doing what we are doing quietly and without pressure and who knows, 8 points is not that big a gap.

Oh yes it is

blades fans have to learn from owls fans how to enjoy good days instead of the auto doomsday belief setting set as default in blades psyche

we have a good team , it really is that simple

We knew when we had woodawrd currie etc we would be ok , its like that now
if it has to be the play offs , we arent playing wolves , burnley or palace , are we
but we will get auto , believe, come on believe for once

I'm pretty sure the only sounding off is coming from the fans. DW will make sure that it doesn't spread to the dressing room.

This is a facsimile of our 2005 promotion team , but with better football , I for one am going to enjoy it
If any of you want to waste the fun by wallowing in gloom , and pessimism , well your missing the moment

Yes we have blown up some years
but lets not forget , weve gone up to
in fact the last time we came down here we were only here 1 season

Well said I remember saying this in 05
Some people just didn't seem able to enjoy it seemingly more interested in warnock fucking up rather than the club succeeding

You know, funnily enough I was thinking against Wycombe that, compared to the 2005 vintage, what this team really like was a Centre Half likely to pop up with a vital goal a la Morgan against Stoke, or Jags against Southampton (though he may well have been in midfield that day). What do you know, the next game Collins pops up with the only goal! Splendid.

I think it's in relegation fights that we tend to choke. Can't remember us ever avoiding relegation when a result has been required on the last day. Whereas in promotion contests that go down to the wire we have tended to be successful. However, as insurance companies point out, past performance does not guarantee favourable future results!

There is a long way to go but this team is full of confidence and playing well .
Huddersfield don't have an easy task either they still have to play Charlton and Wendy.

Technically we needed a point or two on the last day of 92-93, but realistcally we were safe...

Going into the last game at home to Chelsea, we were 3 points off 3rd bottom Oldham with a GD of -1 to theirs of -14, so to go down we would have had to lose 6-0 and Oldham win 7-0!

As it happened, we won 4-2 (and finished 14th) and Oldham beat Palace 3-0, to send the latter down by virtue of having a 2 goal better goal difference.

United have only ever saved themselves on the last day of a season once: they had to win at Man Utd to stay up in 1930, and they did, winning 5-1. In every other year where we could have gone down on the last day (1949, 1968, 1981, 1994, 2007) we have done.

(this does not include 1993 or 1979, where only daft goal difference swings would have kept us up or sent us down)

I thought Oldham beat Southampton 4-3 and Palace lost 3-0 at Arsenal that day....

You're right about 1993 (what is happening to my memory...), but I can pick you up on 1979. Going into that last game at home to Leicester, we would indeed have required a daft goal difference swing to overtake Charlton who were two points ahead and had finished their programme. However, we could have overtaken Oldham with a reasonably sized win as they would then have been on the same points as us with us having a better goal difference. The catch was that Oldham still had 2 games left to play (they won both as it happens).

There's a slight difference :-)

I am pessimistic to an almost obsessional level with regard to all things Sheffield United, but even I did not think there was any chance whatsoever of us going down that day!
