Interesting that it seems to be pace going forward

SHEFFIELD United manager Gary Speed hopes to make another new signing before Saturday's meeting with Preston North End after Jean Calve completed his loan move from AS Nancy. Calve, who impressed the former Wales international during a recent trial, is scheduled to remain at Bramall Lane until the end of the season. The 26-year-old could make his npower Championship debut against Darren Ferguson's team.

Calve represents United's first piece of business since Speed's appointment last week. Having filled the vacancy for a dedicated right-back, coaching staff are now attempting to solve another long-standing problem.

"I'd definitely like to bring at least one more player in before the end of the transfer window," Speed told The Star. "It might happen before our next match but we'll have to wait and see.

"I think we could do with a little bit more pace going forward. I thought we would have benefited from that against Middlesbrough on Sunday.

"There are a few irons in the fire but we want to get it right."

Kris Boyd's second-half goal prevented United from claiming the draw their efforts at the Riverside deserved.

Calve watched the match from the stands before undergoing his medical at the club's Shirecliffe training complex last night.

Speed said: "Jean impressed me when he played for us against Notts County earlier this summer. Since Kyle Naughton and Kyle Walker left, we've always been asking people to fill-in at right-back.

"Jean is very comfortable on the ball and he uses possession well. He provides us with a threat going forward from that position, which is something that I'd like us to do, but, first and foremost, he is also a good solid defender who can get close to his opponent.

"Because of those qualities Jean should give us another dimension."

I've read the odd comment about Sunday's performance reminding people of the Robbo era. While I think that's a bit harsh, in terms of pace, it's not far from the truth. We look sluggish when pressing forward, with only Ward showing genuine pace. It'll be interesting to see who he tries to bring in...

That's symptomatic of Blackwell's approach. At Championship level, you're either going to have players with pace or strength - Blackwell's gameplan was all about the latter. If Speed's keen to change the philosophy, it'll need a major overhaul of personnel to make quick passing to feet with movement off the ball as a reality.

with the problem being that as many have said, the squad he's inherited is hardly blessed with pace. We desperately need someone down the left IMO to give the opposition something other than Wardy to worry about, whether that means giving Yeates a run of games I don't know but the problem remains that, as Fiery has said elsewhere, with Monty, Ertl and Squinny across the middle, it does limit us, particularly as Britton doesn't seem to know what his role is yet.

ive heard a rumour that were supposed to be tracking 2 players. darius vassell (yet again) has hes out of contract and has no where to go and a chelsea youngster patrick van aanholt but aparentley chelsea wont let him leave stamford bridge. must be holding him hostage in the grounds somewhere :)

PVA was mentioned a while ago but he's a full back so I guess he's not on the radar anymore.

Ranger from Newcastle would be a good shout although there was talk of a couple of Prem clubs coming in for him, Blackpool was one.

ranger does sound like a good signing. i noticed he was having touble getting in to the first team at newcastle but was getting noticed in the reserves. hes been described has a livewire with pace and good build play ability and god knows we need some of that at the lane. has its been said though we could do with a lw player more then anything else who could give us more attacking ability and im sure if this was to happen chedder cheesey evens and cressie will soon start banging them in. i carnt personally see McCabe opening his check book for anyone else before the transfer window closes tho but i hope im wrong

Victor Anichebe is mentioned as a possible signing on bladesmad

Van Aanholt was on the bench for Chelski on Saturday I do believe, that's where they are hiding him!

Vassell?

Well he's certainly got pace, which is something Speed has continually mentioned that he's looking for.

Unfortunately tho, I don't think he's got much else

Has this Ranger fella got pace?

Anichebe I seem to remember being quite nippy, but not sure?

Anichebe is a bull, albeit a bit of glass one. If fully fit he'd be perfect for that lone striker role.

If we do bring someone in than it will show that the board is backing him, if we don't i won't be so sure.

I thought Vassell looked great against us in the Premier League. He never stopped running, defended from the front and had our defence all over the shop. Whether he can still do it is another question.

Are they backing him with more money than Blackwell was going to get.
Blackwell was quoted after he signed Jordan that he wanted to make 1 or 2 signings before the window closed.Where is the difference.

apparently anichebe (sp) was mentioned to be joining on loan on radio sheffield earliar this evening

Wasn't Anichebe supposed to be joining the pigs on loan last year, until his injury..?

(Surely not some ruse to push up their ST sales..?)

You worry too much BB. Why not treat yourself to a pamper day in our luxury Spa facilities here at the 4 star Copthorn Hotel......

Steve Gibson. Constantly funds Middlesbrough from his own pocket and gives managers ages to succeed....

Boro are underwritten by Gibson and they are over 100million in debt. This covered by Gibson however could you imagine if his companies hit the shit.

And look how exciting Boro are!

But IMO thats because he backed managers too much. Particularly with Gareth Southgate....who I hold nothing against for the record. He sacked him at the wrong time in my view (both too late and too early). It was plain for all to see that just after the new year of their relegation season, they were struggling for any sort of form and couldnt buy a win. He should have been removed then to give them a chance of staying up....

Instead he kept faith in Southgate but sacked him a few games into the Championship season when they were 4th!!!! In a similar style to our board and the Blackwell situation, they backed the manager at the wrong time (when they should have changed) and then sacked him a few games into a season when they had allowed him all summer to build a team.

A similar situation n some respects.

surely this is showing how bad United are in financially when youve got the like of cardiff who just got saved from a winding up order signing players left right and centre (Koumas, Olifinjana, Naylor, Bellamy and soom Keogh) all 5 of them players would surely get a shirt at us over the crock of shit we are fielding at the moment.
we need to sign players soon and get the team working again, even if it taking gambles on players such as Danny Ward from bolton (on loan at swindon last season and he looked outstanding)
Does anyone know of any players that we are possibly looking at?

Not really, it just shows that we're not prepared to gamble the way Cardiff are, and have done to get themselves in this mess in the 1st place. As another thread elsewhere suggests, the fact they can get away with should be the issue, not that we should be doing the same.

They did get a new investor in who's money has probably started this transfer activity, with Motherwell due to be paid this week.
