Two years for a player who had almost a calendar years worth of mediocre to poor performances in 2015.

How many years do you think Hammond should get? 3? 4?

Six, at least...

Hammond's coming, I suppose we'd best get used to it. (Even if Nigel were to be sacked, I'd foresee the next manager being landed with Hammond, Sammon stylee.)

I'd imagine Hammond's contract will be for two years (family security & all that), but that's far more risky in his case with him being 2 years older than the veteran McEveley. Would much prefer to see him on a one-year deal, but hey ho. That's a part of that very limited budget for next season tied up before we start. Just got to hope & pray that his fabled "exemplary influence on the pitch & the training ground" is worth it.

In honesty, I'd prefer we didn't sign him at all. But I realise we will &, therefore, wish him well & very much hope it works out. Many more performances mirroring last Saturday's one needed now.

So if we bow to the inevitable and everyone in the thread gets their wish that's a first choice XI with:

McEveley
Hammond
Flynn
Coutts
Sharp
Brayford (after November knowing him)

I expect Adams to be sold.

Room for 4 more newbies. They'd better be good ones. Because that core isn't a top 6 team in the making.

Has Hammond got his coaching badges or is working towards obtaining them.

Is Hammond a model professional who has aspirations to go into management .

Has Adkins been given full remit to build SUFC like he did with Southampton .If so does he see Hammond as part of the dynasty .

Does Adkins think / want Hammond to follow him at the lane , groomed for future manager .

There's got to more than this Hammond / Adkins love in relationship than just kicking a football Saturday / Tuesday.

Looks like if McCabe buys in to Adkins football philosophy , then we have to follow .

Truth be known his performances are improving , and in a perverse sort of way , the bloke Hammond is growing on me.

Anybody who would run through a brick wall for the manager of SUFC , also does it for the club and fans. Need more of these setting the benchmark / standards not doing our usual of slagging them off or the shouts off fuck off Hammond your shite .

Room for 4 more newbies. They'd better be good ones. Because that core isn't a top 6 team in the making.

Some of them will be on the bench , and not necessarily the first 11. It's building a reliable squad . Some players may have finally had a brain stormer and realised they are at the last chance saloon.

But would the likes of McEveley or Flynn be in that core, or simply be part of the squad? I'm not thrilled by the idea of Flynn as a first-choice part of the middle of midfield, but as a versatile squad player on a reduced wage I don't think it would be a complete disaster...

Like Hammond is starting to grow on you, maybe Adkins is starting to grow on certain players. Maybe they've started to realise that he's not a complete idiot and have been impressed by some of what he does, particularly in weeding out the bad eggs (nowt better than a mixed metaphor). And maybe they now realise he's not the soft as shit type they thought he was, through his actions rather than just throwing teacups and shouting.

Neither am i thrilled .
Go on then give him a monthly contract.
No wages if not selected or injured 50% wage if on the bench:)

I think a reality check is needed. We are clearly short of cash, and need to focus on some quality additions in key areas. Blowing our budget on a right back should at least teach us something.

I don't think anyone arguing to retain McCeveley would suggest he's a top drawer player. But he is more than adequate for league one.

To get out of the division on limited resource, our best chance us to target quality in the right areas.

Players like Flynn, Coutts and Hammond in the centre of the park = more third division football no matter what.

Players like McCeveley at full back with a quality midfield = chance of promotion.

I was having a quick look earlier at the S24SU ratings for the season. I can only see the top 5, but surprised to see Brayford comes in at number 4 as I don't think he's even been as good as McEveley, let alone one of our better performers.

Long 6.81
K Wallace 6.65
Sharp 6.64
Brayford 6.45
Edgar 6.40

J Mac is down at 6.12...

McEveley had some horrendous scores earlier in the season that would have pulled his average down though (Gillingham (A), Bury (H), Colchester (H), Bradford (A) off the top of my head.

If it were up to me he would be a goner in spite of his improvement over the 2nd half of the season. However, it’s not an no amount of bitching or moaning will change that. If Adkins thinks he can bring something then he will get my backing and I will hope his improved form continues and he doesn’t return to the Jay McEveley of 2015. This formation seems to suit him more than playing in a 4 so that’s one point in his favour. Let’s hope that characters like him and Hammond, despite their limitations help to bring out the best in some of our more talented players like Adams, Sharp, Coutts, Brayford and the kids. We’ll still need more flair and pace than we have though I reckon. Perhaps the batman villain playing for the U21s today will help.

In 2015, MCCeveley was ruined by piss poor squad building.

To have such an enormous squad, bereft of CH's, was unforgivable.

McCeveley needed dropping during a run of bad firm. Through lack of options he was overplayed and it destroyed his form and confidence.

Just look at the way Sharp responded after a short break this season. With 40+ players on the books, we still couldn't afford McCeveley that luxury.

I, for one, will be gutted if we have McEveley, Hammond, Flynn and Coutts are in our first team squad next season ....... it will evidence that lessons have NOT been learned from the last 4 years !!

Come on NA ........ you can do so much better for this Club than retain our proven underperformers ........

Yes, as I said previously, those who's contracts are up and staring non league in the face !

I may be wrong but I thought there was a rule that if you offer a player a new contract it has to be at least equivalent to his last one which rules out the pay as you play ideas ?

According to today's Star Adkins says we 'grossly underestimate McEverly's contribution'....' he's on the training pitch every day'.. oh and he's got a left foot which helps !

Seems to be a pattern developing here, I'm beginning to think we should attend training sessions not games ? Doesn't bode very well for contract negotiations and player recruitment this summer does it?
Sorry are you saying J Mc is rubbish? I thought everyone was just messing about when they called him into question from a mickey take point of view and a bit of banter?
Just my ignorance then.
