Latest interview with Clough:

Brandy and Taylor can go; up to their agents to attract reasonable offers.

Kennedy just outside main squad, still an U-21 development player.

Need a main squad of 18/19 and have 10/11 after releases and loan players exits; therefore 7/8 players yet to come!

Actively looking for that number within budget.

Talks ongoing with Maguire, no official interest yet from any other club, only speculation.

My observations would be that it is a pity that Taylor seems to have alienated Clough, but it has to be something to do with his "character" which the manager bases so much importance on, quite rightly.

So many incoming players will need time to gel together, so we should not expect too much too soon next season. Of course effective pre-season friendlies will be key. Then again some of the new signings may have played for us last season.

I'm very sorry to see Hill depart, great clubman and a very good defender. With so many changes I think he should have been retained as cover; he can play right across the back line too. Should Maguire depart then it looks even worse.

No problems with Miller leaving or the others. Hope Porter leaves too.

Yep, see where you're going with this...

Wow he doesnt mess around does he?

What kind of wages are Brandy/Taylor on?
is is realistic to expect other League 1 clubs to be able to match their salarys?

Hill was poor technically. Can't fault his fitness and work rate, also good attitude. But the amount of times he got skinned and left for dead by an average League 1 striker, and the amount of times I saw him scuff a clearance into the path of a speculative off the ball run by an opponent were far too many. Good head on his shoulders, plenty of experience, but can't even justify a first 11 place in the third tier. I'm sure he'll be able to ply his trade elsewhere.

Think that's a good summation Damski. Nothing unkind in that, just an accurate appraisal of a man who couldn't be considered a part of our future. As decent people go, you won't find better, and if that counts for anything (which I doubt) I hope he'll secure a job elsewhere soon. I hope Matt is looking beyond his career and goes into coaching etc, he'd make a decent coach with good people skills.

Not really. Decent back up, and undoubtably did his job when called upon.

Our season changed when we got rid of the rubbish that was MacMahon and Hill and replaced them with Brayford and Harris. Also the changing of the keeper. Just because Hill was a nice bloke he seems to get away with being a terrible player.MacMahon was probably a better player but no one has a good word about him because he was also a prick. The improvement of Flynn ,Murphy, Maguire and Collins also happened at the same time ,it wasn't coincidence ,it was replacing poor footballers with good ones.

Dunno about that. Getting rid of McMahon was a great move, he'd been nothing short of rubbish since we signed him. Obviously replacing him with Brayford was a massive upgrade too. Bit harsh on Hill though, he was only really supposed to be cover anyway. Not his fault that he ended up playing nearly every game by accident.

Totally agree with that analysis barring the general consensus that you are too harsh on Hill.

Tony McMahon was one of my least favourite United players ever. Immobile, unintelligent, petulant and cowardly. How he was so popular at Boro I cannot fathom, and what made Blackpool think he was worth a contract is an eternal mystery.

Not that I would put Weir in the same class as Clough, but I do think bringing in too many new faces was one of the reason he failed.so badly.
I just hope we aren't making the same mistake again.....

In Nigel we trust.......:)

(With fingers crossed)

The bit where you say we shouldn't expect too much too soon next season can't be right.Next season we have to get off to a good start in my eyes and the signings clough makes have to be good enough, especially with the backing he's supposedly getting.

We've got to bring a good few players in cos we've only got 11 !
Weir brought some decent ones in,he just couldn't get em to play .
Nige has already stated he want's em in asap so they can have a good pre season, and integrate quickly.plus I think he's a good judge of a player and we can trust what he decides....

As it stands you could argue that we only need to add 2 new faces to the starting 11. If we can get Coady back in that is down to 1. That is assuming the formation doesn't change. Overall he has a strong basis of the team and he is obviously looking to bring in players who can fit into the system he likes. I can't see adding 6-8 players would mean we wouldn't be able to 'hit the ground running'.
Didn't Warnock bring in 5 players on one day in our last promotion winning season?

I totally agree with you, and he is strengthening in the areas where we are weakest, so far., It's just that when a manager is spoiled for choice it can some times become harder to create that team bonding than when his players have to carry some one through a bad spell,
When he has all 20 players on a par is when we'll see just how good a manage NC is.

Warrington. The following are the only 1st team squad players we have:

Goal: Howard. Long.

Defenders: Collins, Maguire, Harris

Midfield: Flynn, Scougall, Baxter, Campbell-Rice, Murphy, McGinn, Doyle

Striker: McNulty.

Clough wants a first team squad of18/19 and it may be beyond anybody's control that Maguire will leave soon.

I guess he thinks we now need 4 defenders and 3 strikers. Unlike Clough I would count Kennedy in my first team squad so I'd go for a.n.other midfielder / Coady if possible.

I don't think it's anywhere near as simple as you think. As he builds the squad we will get an inkling what formation he intends to play. 4-5-1 evolved through circumstances last season but he did say McNulty would be "one of a very strong strike force" so I suspect we will play 4-4-2 more often.

Let's presume we've got Davies to add to the list of defenders and hopefully freeman we're realistically looking at a versatile defender who can play centre back and cover left back and the defence is sorted.

I still think porter will sign so we need two first time strikers, though I do think next season will be similar to this one with a 4-4-1-1 formation being played with scougal and mcnulty being the preferred forward line.

Agree with that woodwardfan,as iv'e said in many threads clough is a 4-4-2 man in general if anyone looks at his managing career.

Last year we played the formation we had too due to the players he had to choose from, that said,we now know he is very veratile as a manager and next year we could set up in a number of ways but i really do think our main formation next year will be 4-4-2 imo.

I would wait until the start of the season until predicting the formation. Cloughy has always picked his best 11 players then picks a formation around those players.
