Outgoing? Anel

He's a better player than he showed last season but he's pretty easily replaceable at this level if we're playing a 4. He never got back to the levels he showed in those first few months and despite his obvious talent, I never felt comfortable with him in a defensive sense. I think he looks good in a good team. Be interesting to see how he gets on at another struggling team.
This is a Berge type of move for Anel. He'll be looking for another move next summer as he'll be in the same position.

I'm not sure signing Anel for Ipswich dramatically improves their chances of staying up either.

I think Berge showed last season that he was Premier League quality despite playing in a poor team. Not actually sure Anel is actually Prem quality myself.

I agree, I'm not sitting here devastated that he's potentially going. I think we expected it to be honest with how he & his dad conducted themselves last season. If it gets us £10-15m in the bank to continue strengthening the team then great, he'd be another player that would run his contract down if we didnt gain promotion. We have to be better at selling players at the right time, I think we're doing that here if he goes.

If you gave me a choice of losing 1 of Anel, Hamer, Arblaster or Vini Souza, I would go for Anel every time.
He was amazing in his first season for us but I always got the impression that he thought he was better than the club and saw us as a stepping stone.
He was found out a little bit last season (as was most of the team to be honest) against better teams where he had to defend more with little opportunity to get forward and showed a tendency to make some rash challenges after finding himself out of position/chasing the defender.
If he goes to Ipswich, he will be in a similar position to last season.
Is he replaceable? Yes. Potentially, we have the replacement already in the club (Souttar/Gilchrist - albeit temporary solutions as loans) or we could look to bring in someone like Mepham at around 30-50% of what we would hope to receive.
Keeping the 3 others would be much better for the club moving forward.

I don't think Anel is reliable enough as a first choice centre half at the top level. He's not disciplined enough, positionally aware enough, disciplined enough tactically, vocal enough or enough of a leader.

He's technically very good, and a very good athlete but he's not a commanding centre half and isn't a physical presence, or up for a physical battle against centre forwards. He's soft, in that respect.

If you want him as your '+1' centre half, your Kilgallon or your Jags to your Morgs, you may be OK. If you want him to be the main man, no.

Fwiw, I think he'd excel here this season, just because his overall ability and athleticism would compensate for his weaknesses. I'd keep him for us this season, but if a good offer comes in, I'd cash in and find a solid, cheaper replacement. I'd rather lose him, if it meant holding on to others.

Personally, I think he'd do much better this season at Ud but if he prefers to go, then fine - it will inevitably result in another season of struggle and getting tonked lies for him then. He may well earn more but Ipswich, while in the Prem, are not really the stepping stone I'm sure he'd be looking for - more of a sideways step.
His value should allow more wheeling & dealing in the market but I hope he's not replaced by another immobile CB, especially if CW plans to continue with a back four - we have enough of those. Anyone that plays with Souttar and Robinson at the back will need to make up for their lack of pace, acceleration and supertanker-esque turning speed.

If we got anywhere north of 10 million for him you’d like to think we could replace him with half that fee. It might mean looking abroad again but still a good quality championship CB should be attainable for that sort of fee.

I still don’t think we really need to replace him right now.

Use Souttar as a CB
Gilchrist becomes Souttar’s backup.

Sign a good quality proven pacey right back
Gilchrist becomes backup for this too along with Shackleton.

Either bank the change towards trying to sign Souttar permanently later or use it to ensure we get another decent striker in

I’m absolutely fine with Abel leaving. Would rather keep Blaster, Hamer and Souza and sell Anel and his dad out of all our ‘prized assets’

Club are prepared for him to leave and expect him to.

As it stands, most likely he’s going to Ipswich.
And there we are.

To that end with that info, I was told his earmarked replacement was Mepham.
Do with that what you will.

Shame Southampton nicked Ronnie Edwards early, he'd have been perfect

Berge showed he was premier league quality when he played for us by being our best midfielder 😂. Didn’t have to move to Burnley to prove anything. Anyone with eyes and triple digit IQ could see he was a class player

But he never showed it with us in The Premier League as he hardly played. I agree that it was obvious he was class though. Some still seem to think he's shit for some reason

Not upset to see him go tbh. We got 1 good season out of him & if the rumours of £17 million are to be believed, then we absolutely should sell.

Let’s be honest, he was dogshit last season (although not in his own). A good fee can be used elsewhere in the side to bring in a competent championship defender & should we go up, get an actual improvement next season.

A good mate of mine is a Town fan. He asked me about Ahmedhodzic, my response was:
"has all the attributes. Quick, loves a tackle, likes driving forward, scores quite a few for a centre half. Downsides are that he loves wrestling and gets caught on the turn so picks up a lot of yellows. Can be petulant".

Wonder how big a chunk Malmö will be getting if he is sold.

He cost us £4.5m
I think I saw 12.5% of any profit. If we sell for £15m they'll take about £1.5m.

If Anel goes to Ipswich and has another stinker of a relegation season, his reputation is going to be in tatters. If I were him, I'd be looking for a move to a top Euro league somewhere. Good business for us though!

I am so glad some of our so called supporters are not in charge in charge of recruitment/sales.

Some of you clearly know absolutely nothing about football, do you really think a Premier league team would come in and pay a premium if he was sh*te.

One bad season does not define him as a player.

His best attribute is his ability to drive forward with the ball, including carrying it deep into the final third, and his opportunities to do this for us will be limited this season if we’re playing a 4. He barely shifted out of position vs QPR until switched to the right.

So we’re nullifying that attacking attribute with the current shape, and he can be fragile defensively. This makes him replaceable, for me.

Not sure Chris knows what formation to play with the players he has - he needs to get the pieces in the right place and quick

Don’t know if Anel has spoken to Wolves as well but heard we’d accepted bids from both clubs?

I hope we get the £17m rumoured? That or at least some of that should make the overall squad much stronger
