At the moment and I just put this in shoutbox, my feelings on Anel are as follows:
Removing the expectation and positivelity I had towards him entering this season, it feels like he is too good for the Championship but not good enough for the Premier League right now.
In the Championship we are attacking most of the time. He has little defending to do. He is comfortable with the ball, rangy so can cover ground and can score the odd goal. Even at this level he picked up plenty of bookings when he ended up the wrong side of his man.
In the Premiership we are defending most of the time. So, scope to display what he is good at almost entirely disappears. Focus is then on his basic defending. He still gets in the wrong position at times but given the lack of possession this happens frequently. His defensive judgment can also be lacking e.g. going to ground on Luton’s deflected winner.
If we are to set aside 3-5-2 then his defensive shortcomings are going to be more frequently exposed in a 4 at the back.
On a pure football basis, if Wilder sees us doing better as a 4-3-3 team then I don’t see where Anel fits.
In a 4-3-3 you have one more bona fide attacking player and you’d have to conclude that having Brereton-Diaz, Archer or McAtee in the team is more likely to get us wins than losing one of them and having Anel in.
If we can get someone in who is dominant and loves the art of defending as much as Anel loves the art of attacking, then this might simply be that we are swapping out a square peg for a round peg when we now have a round hole to fill.
