Where has the figure of £10m come from?
 

Anel is way way way overrated imo.

Half decent going forward and therefore a very good Championship player, but his weaknesses are exposed as he gets further to the food chain in English football as his strengths are going forward but not particularly defending which is a bit of a sod when he is spending a lot more time doing that as we are pushed back as a team every PL game. He isn't good enough for a top PL team either so it's really a case of being a top Championshio player in a team doing well in it, and a poor PL player in a struggling team.

Bottom line is he would be great for us again next season when we are back in the Championship, but then he seems to be a moody player who probably doesn't want to be around with us again back in the Championship, which is fair enough I suppose.

If we can get a decent fee for him then to me, it makes perfect sense to move him on. I like the lad but we could use the money he would bring in far more effectively. Don't forget he is one of the Newcastle 8 brigade and one of them whose head dropped like a trapdoor on the scaffold when it turned tough. I certainly wouldn't be upset if he's moved on. One of them I would look back on when his name was mentioned in the distant future and basically be indifferent about. Move him on, take the money and reinvest. Good for us, good for the lad and his Daddy.

Exactly this. The other important factor is cashing in when the value is at its highest! One semi-decent championship season and a bit of a disappointing PL season would suggest, now is that time. By the Summer we know we'll be in hostage/fire sale/Ramsdale strop throwing territory....
 
Too many times guilty of letting a forward back into him and then turn past him leading to a grab or trip. Very noticeable recently. What with Egans propensity for allowing the long punt to go over his head and JLT constantly on the edge of the Exocet tackle and a red card, we’re a bit fucked. I say cash in and build again. He’s not got the bottle for a losing side.
 
Anel is a good player, however, relegation is odds on for us, unfortunately. I'm not sure if his contract is up at the end of this season or not. reluctantly he should be sold than get nowt for him.
 
Never thought we’d get to the Premier League and sell our three best players within 6 months, certainly a novel strategy for a newly promoted team (and one I imagine will never be tried again looking at the league table).

But that’s Sheffield United for you, managed to knock ourselves out before we’ve even stepped into the ring. 😂

I work at NCFC quite regularly and they have a superb training infrastructure - not saying that they are necessarily benefiting from their PL approach as their current league position and continued watering down of their playing stable would suggest not - but they have truly invested in their infrastructure and at least have something to show for their strategy - we seem to be on the road to nowhere imo.
 
I thought Anel would be comfortable stepping up to the PL but it really hasn't worked out for him. Just seems to resort to holding & wrestling with opposing players now rather than defending "properly". Although I'd like to see him have a run of games under Wilder's instruction before we get rid.

On the other hand, Burnley have spent 90 million, bought one of said “three best players” off us, and are a mere three points in front of us.

Maybe I’ve misunderstood then. I thought since you’ve posted this stuff about selling our best players quite a lot that you thought keeping Berge, for example, would’ve made a difference. His performances for Burnley this season suggest otherwise.

What’s the better approach, in your opinion?

I’d have kept Ndiaye and let him go for free in summer and I’d keep Anel now. I don’t think the former would have gone full Van Hoojdoink.

Generally; fewer wasteful punts on international players (Slimane, Traore) with obvious limitations and more athletic, powerful players who can compete physically but may fall short technically. Look at experienced free transfers who have played at this level. Throw the “players play better in their last year of contract” in the bin.

I’d have liked to have kept Ndiaye but I think we’d promised him he could go if we got a bid of a certain sum. Keep him and we possibly have a slim chance of staying up, for a season. But then what?

Without spending tens of millions you’re us in the first PL season under Wilder or Luton this season. Get the right manager and the right team spirit and you can ruffle a few feathers…for a season. Luton ain’t in the PL to stay, are they?

I’m increasingly of the opinion that the job is fucked unless you land on a miracle owner like Brighton or Brentford have. Just spending money isn’t enough—see Forest, Everton, or Burnley. The owners of Brighton and Brentford aren’t just rich, they’re rich and have the right idea of how to run a club. Owners like that are like hen’s teeth.

I see a lot of comments along the lines of “if we’d done this deal a bit quicker/bought this player instead of that player/spent a few million more” then somehow we’d be in a different situation. I don’t think it’s accurate, sadly.

I assume someone looked at what we paid for him, saw a superb first season which cannot have seen his value depreciate, and then added on the value of him being a Premier League starter who is still under 25. As I don't shit the bed over a small number of mediocre performances, any bid that is not eight figures gets immediately hung up on for me

On Ndiaye he goes at the end of the season but gives you at least some threat. Some hope. Also keeps the door ajar for a takeover which is ultimately what we need and have needed.

I suspect Luton will give it a good go, look to capitalise on the income to build the infrastructure off the pitch, develop the quality in the squad and then come back up again and have a stronger crack at it in a couple of seasons. That’s the aim to develop a base.

I don’t think the odds being stacked against promoted clubs mean you can excuse our summer shambles nor the current outlook. Which is essentially the nub of a lot of people’s frustration.

To me, "shambles" implies that the biggest problem was incompetence or poor decisions. I just don't think that's accurate. The lack of money dramatically limits the choices available to us. We certainly seem to have made some questionable decisions in the transfer market--Traore seems like the worst--but, again, when you don't have the money you're rolling the dice.

We need a new owner to take the next step. I'm just pessimistic about our chances of finding a good one and nervous that we'll end up with someone who really does serious damage to the club.

I don’t mean to simplify everything down to this, but…. When we sold Iliman, Hecky openly said that the spirit of the place was low. I’ve not forgotten that as it’s such an unusually frank admission.

The 8-0 showed certain players’ heads dropping in a way I’d never seen before. Anel the most notable.

I think the sad reality is that he began to think of leaving just at the time he should have been most enthused about staying.

The odds of Traore contributing significantly were always low. It was said at the time that we hoped we’d stolen a march on others by gambling on his progress continuing following injury.

In reality we spent Championship money and hoped for Prem quality. That’s just so rare an outcome.
 

It will be a shame to see him go. He was quality last season, and I tipped him as a future captain after watching his first interview for the club. He just had that bit of something about him. Typical that as soon as he gets the armband, it looks like we are fucking selling him.

Then again, what did we pay for him, 3 or 4 million? We got a promotion out of him, so if we can make a decent profit too then it's not a disaster.

However, I absolutely echo what other posters have said. If you didn't know better, and looked at our transfer activity this season, you'd most likely think we got relegated in the summer.
