ANDY REID believes that some Irish players are not getting a fair chance to break into the international squad. Reid, himself controversially deemed surplus to requirements by Giovanni Trapattoni, says that he has no argument with the best players being selected for international duty regardless of their place of birth, but he has reservations about the declared management policy of looking to entice players born outside the country, if it’s at the expense of capable and committed native talent.

"Where I think it’s unreasonable is where some of the Irish players get overlooked," says the 28-year-old Dubliner. "Really good examples that I can use — because I’m playing with them now — are Stephen Quinn and Mark Yeates at Sheffield United.

"Stephen Quinn’s a brilliant player and is more than capable of going into that Ireland team and doing well. Mark Yeates has a tremendous amount of ability — a lot more ability than some of the players who are in the squad.

"And these are two players who were born and raised in Dublin. You couldn’t get two more Irish players. And you can’t tell me that for them to play for Ireland — as opposed to someone who was not born — doesn’t mean more.

"If that upsets people, that upsets people. But for me that’s not even a discussion — that’s a fact. Because I know how much it means to pull on the green shirt. And it must be very hurtful for lads like that to be overlooked."

Sunderland’s Reid is about to finish an impressive loan spell with Sheffield United, who say they want to keep him, but the Dubliner is anxious to get back playing in the Premiership.

Andy reid wanting to get back too the prem is a lil worrying though lets hope he means with united and not back playing at Sunderland. Come on McCabe release a few of the moths in the united bank account and sign him before some other chumps do

If Reid leaves we are stuffed for quality movement.

Reid - Well lets hope we can convince him that SUFC is the place for him to be, he's certainly settled in to the team and I can't knock his commitment, at 0-2 down v Hull he was the player getting the ball and being prepared to keep possession.

Quinn - lacks discipline for international football

Yeates - Too easily distracted with a tap on the ankles, struggles to deliver quality early enough

I'm a fan of Yeates but there are two flaws in his game - one is a big flaw for a footballer, other a big flaw for a winger.

CROSSING: Too often, strong or weak foot, his crosses are poor. I don't expect him to find a United player with many crosses right now due to the lack of height in our front line but I do expect to see some dangerous balls going in there. He hits the first man on an alarming basis.

DECISION MAKING: I thought Paul Ifill got a rough ride from Blades due to his poor decision making but Yeates makes him look a genius in comparison. Yeates consistently chooses the wrong options whether it be to pass, shoot, take on the defender or cross early. Our moves often break down at Yeates simply due to poor decisions rather than good defending.

Those two flaws make Yeates a 1 in 4 player. When he managed to string 3 performances in a row together, he looked our best player by a mile. However, when he hits a poor run (like now), he is infuriating. He reminds me of Brunt a few years back at Wednesday. Capable of a special moment but far too infrequent. We need to persist because the quality is there but more consistency needed.

I look forward to Pinchy's thoughts on this one.

Good call there in my opinion, like Brunt, he appears to have random feet.

He winds up to shoot and it could be a fantastic curling effort into the top corner showing outstanding technique, or it could just as easily end up hitting the bloke on row Z and looking like he's no idea how to strike a ball.

3 times out of 4 it's the bloke on row Z.

Back on the original topic, I believe he's accepted the charge and therefore is banned for 3 games.

Yeah thats the end of him then. Birch has said Sunderland will take him back and try and sell him. That rules us out! Nice whilst it lasted.

Not sure where the creativity now comes from. Evans benefitted from some decent service. He goes back to now living off scraps wth the rest of them.

Going to be a patchwork side tomorrow to say the least.

No Monty, Quinn, Bartley.
Reid and Batth gone back.
Britton a doubt and Hendo some way off too.

May have to play 2 up front as we dont have enough midfielders! If Britton is not fit then unsure who will play central midfield and a big ask for Williamson to play and last whole game?

Struggling to fill the bench from the likely line up/subs?

-------------Simonen-------------
Calve---Nosworthy---Ertl---Lowton
Yeates---Williiamson---Britton---Cresswell
-----------Ward---Evans-----------------

Subs : Wright, Kozluk, Bogdanovic then I am really struggling for senior pros....have to be a load of kids?

Fair play to those going looking at the above. Could be a long afternoon!

Adams wont have seen the players in training it will be difficult for him . However,a midfield of Willo and Britton looks lightweight and I wonder if Lowton might go in there(for Ward) with Willamson tring to play behind Evans. Leaving Kozzy to go in at left back.

Pardon me for asking but when did he say that ? and if sunderland are selling him whats too stop us from buying him. Yes yes i know were skint but its got to be time for united to open the wallet and Reid looks a very wise investment

1, The wallet is empty
2, We can't fit his wages within our budget
3, He belongs in the Premier League and surely wants to be there

If no-one goes for him between now and summer then we have a chance. But the odds of that are slim to err.. none.

Sorry.

Reid

Todays Star.

Birch says "they will look to sell Andy during the transfer window"

He added "Whether or not what they want is beyond our reach we'll have to see. But, if they don't sell him, then there's no reason why we can't have another conversation with Andy, subject to what he would like, about bringing him back again."

I would love to see us afford him but it aint going to happen. They will want a million + and also his wages are way out of reach. We need him too but that is the last we will see of him at the Lane.

Never say never.....

I never thought i'd see such as Tony Currie at the Lane....a player with such ability it scares you.

Let's hope we do see players of ability like Reid not so far in the future.

The younger fans want it and so do I.

Still hoping....

It's a real shame, as if we we a promotion chasing side, i reckon there's a real chance we'd be able to land him. However with attendances falling like a stone, and us looking like we'll be in a relegation battle for the rest of the season then i think there's no chance.

im sure ive read somewhere that they only wanted 500k. If united had any sense theyed send not-worthy back to sunderland and keep reid. If united went and knocked on donny rovers door and asked for what they owed us maybe we could purchase him

Where does all the managerial change leave the Irish player we are supposed to be signing in the New Year? I can't remember his name / be arsed to find out.

Sunderland are looking to sell both Reid and Nosworthy in the window.Might have to take Nosworthy just to get Reid.

That's not a bad starting 11 IMO. Better than a lot of teams in this division

.....and if sunderland are selling him whats too stop us from buying him......

Take a wild guess.

............Yes yes i know were skint but its got to be time for united to open the wallet.....

That'll be why. I'd love to see Andy Reid sign for us, but there's not much chance of that happening. The club is skint, the chairman isn't exactly a gazillionaire and the owner won't spend a penny. United's wallet is like Old Mother Hubbard's cupboard. And so the poor doggies get none.

just come across this fellas and if any of it is true we might be able to keep him a lil bit longer. Ignore the shite about ipswich and keane though

JACK Colback is poised to extend his stay at Ipswich Town until the end of the season.
The Sunderland utility player’s loan spell at Portman Road is expires at the start of 2011 but Steve Bruce says he will leave it in the player’s own hands to decide whether he will stay at Ipswich or return to Wearside. And with Colback enjoying his time at East Anglia – playing in pretty much every game now and aware that his first-team chances at Sunderland will be limited – the 21-year-old will commit himself to the Blues’ cause for the rest of the campaign.

That will be good news for beleagured Ipswich boss Roy Keane, who has talked of the prospect of Colback returning to Sunderland as “a disaster.” But Bruce said: “I’m aware that Jack’s loan spell is almost up at Ipswich but I’m going to leave it to him to decide whether or not he comes back.

“I’ve had Roy on the phone talking about it and it was interesting situation – we do have injury problems at the moment, but then I know Jack is doing well down there and getting regular football. “So we’ll have a word with Jack and leave the ball in his court really – if he wants to come back then he’s free to do that but if he wants to stay there until the end of the season, we’re happy that that will continue helping him to improve.”

Colback is currently in his second loan spell at Ipswich and is expected to play against Coventry City this afternoon, which will make it a dozen first-team appearances this season. Keane has spoken about how well the young prospect is developing and Colback can now expect to be involved in every game at Ipswich that he’s fit for if he stays.

Sunderland are happy for him to remain out on loan, feeling that it is best for his long-term development. And with Colback relishing regular football at Ipswich, it looks like Keane has got his man for the remainder of the season.

Meanwhile, Sunderland are happy for all their other loan players to remain at their temporary clubs
Andy Reid and Nyron Nosworthy are at Sheffield United, David Healy is at Doncaster Rovers, George McCartney at Leeds United and Oumare Tounkare and Jean-Yves M’voto at Oldham Athletic.

Sheffield United are keen to sign their two Sunderland loan players permanently, as are Leeds, who want to take McCartney to Elland Road full-time. But, as ever, wages are the sticking point with Reid, Nosworthy and McCartney all on money which is prohibitive to Championship clubs looking to buy.

Sunderland, though, are prepared to negotiate on realistic offers.

I expect there will be a bit of wheel and deal, but lets see how they get on with Micky's boot up their arses. Might need fewer changes than everyone seems to expect...

Ive just read an interview with Micky in the Yorkshire post and he seems to think he wont have an imediate impact on united what with the current bans. I wasnt expecting a dramatic impact anyway but have a read for yourselfs

NEW manager Micky Adams takes charge of his first game as Sheffield United manager hamstrung by the unavailability of four key players. Midfielders Nick Montgomery, Andy Reid and Stephen Quinn plus defender Kyle Bartley are all banned for this afternoon's trip to Burnley.

The suspensions are linked to the bad-tempered defeat at Norwich City four days ago. Montgomery and Bartley are banned for one game after collecting fifth bookings of the season while Quinn and Reid were sent off for violent conduct and now serve three-game bans. With defender Andy Taylor also joining a lengthy long-term injury list over Christmas, Adams has only 14 senior professionals available including two goalkeepers.Adams met his new squad for the first time yesterday morning and now has two games in the space of three days, against Burnley and Doncaster Rovers.

The Blades are only two points clear of the Championship relegation zone and could drop into the bottom three if they lose at Turf Moor "I don't think there is a great deal of impact I can have in these next two games other than massaging a few egos and trying to pick players up," said Adams. "We are in a relegation battle and we want to fight our way out of it – but we have got a few suspensions which does not help."The Blades released caretaker-manager John Carver and assistant Sam Ellis after the Norwich defeat – leaving Adams to reach, largely, his own verdict on today's team selection.

"I am sure everyone will have an opinion on what the team should be," he said. "I will pick (development coach) Mark Smith's brain and (goalkeeping coach) Paul Crichton's, and the physios, and the masseurs."Looking at the squad, there is clearly a group of players who should be doing better – but confidence is not a pill you can give players. It has to be a self motivating thing. If there was a pill, I think we would all buy it, wouldnt we?"I am just going to have to suck it and see over these next couple of games." Midfielder Johnny Ertl is expected to deputise for centreback Bartley while, in the centre of the park, Adams may hand a first start of the season to Lee Williamson, who has been an unused substitute for the last three games after recovering from back surgery in the summer.

Too right CB79. I think todays team picks itself by necessity and I expect we will be chucking a few of the kids on the bench.

Exciting times
