I’ve got something boring DIY stuff to plan and prepare this weekend, and in the search of an excuse to avoid that I found the 12 minute Blades Player highlights from the Scunthorpe game. I thought I’d have a look at our attacking play and chances created.
First of all, a general impression is that the difference in playing style is obvious. We try to pass it on the deck a lot more, and don’t pump it into the box at any opportunity. I’d need to watch a full game to tell how much we varied it of course.
A look at the chances that the hightlighs showed, with the added count of passes before each finish:
100% chances:
1:58 (into the highlights): Ward hits post. Jordan picks up a loose ball and crosses. 1 pass.
3:22: Evans hits post. We regain possession in their half a few times before a good tackle from Ertl provides Evans with the chance to turn and shoot. 1 pass.
5:40: It is possibly more, but I count 13 uninterupted passes before Cresswell shoots tamely when one on one with the goalkeeper. Many of the passes are sideways and the move takes us back to Nosworthy’s whose dummy, dribble and pass makes the move a penetrative one. Well done to Ward who smartly flicks the ball through to Cressy. 13 passes.
5:57: Bartley header from a corner is saved on the line. 1 pass.
6:32: Ertl converts Calve’s free kick. Ruled out for some unknown reason, possibly Bartley climbing on a defender. 1 pass.
10:08: Cresswell’s (I think) header from corner is saved on the line. 1 pass.
50% chances:
1:16: Evans shot blocked. A passing move that starts in our half, and leads to Calve overlapping and crossing. Easily blocked. 6 passes.
2:05: Ward volley blocked. Evans regained possession in the box and crossed. 1 pass.
2:19: Cresswell heads wide from Calve’s cross. 3 passes.
4: 52: Poor shot from Evans. Cressy wins the ball back in their half, clever pass to Ward who puts in a cross from the byline. 2 passes. Note: Some nice play before Cressy wins it back.
5:42: Jordan picks up a clearence, crosses for Ward, who doesn’t connect properly with his volley. 1 pass.
9:55: Bogdanovic header from a corner. 1 pass.
Also:
We had two penalty appeals, one may have been given on a different day.
SUMMARY:
INTERPRETATION:
We can probably consider ourself a little unlucky in this match. Normal chance to goal ratio varies from 3:1 to 4:1. It is also pleasing that our players can show more technical ability than under Blackwell.
However we must be careful so we don’t let the amount of possession and “nice” play make us believe that we really should have scored 4 or 5 ourselves.
The main progress in terms of what I see as effective football, is that we seem determined to make a chance out of it when we win possession high up the pitch.

SUMMARY:
- 6 real chances
- 6 half chances
- An obvious change of playing style
- Most chances still happened following moves with few passes.
- A lot of the chances happened following us winning back the ball in the opposition’s third.
- Set pieces apart, only the front trio finished the moves which could be classed as chances.
