In his 25-odd years in management Wilder has never come close to getting a team relegated in the EFL. Normally his teams are in the promotion mix or at worst comfortable mid-table.

I'd be more worried about relegation if we had a different manager.

There are too many big teams with parachute payments for us to hope for promotion. (the three that came down for starters). Seventh or eighth place and play-offs is probably the best we can hope for. Anyone hoping for top 2 is in for a disappointing season.

To be fair 2/3 of the prior parachute teams are gone.

Leicester through the trapdoor, Ipswich went up and Saints have plenty on their plate with the awkward set up with their current manager and lower 2nd year payments with players who gave it a go last time perhaps deciding to look elsewhere.

West Ham will do fine. They’ll raise a lot of cash and then cherry pick players good enough to get them up, I’ve no doubt.

Wolves already started losing players in January, have messed around with the manager and still players want to leave after one of the lowest points totals.

Burnley only just secured a manager who doesn’t know the Championship it all. There seems genuine worry there that they are going to haemorrhage too many good players. Esteve is going, and others too.

I don’t think it is an impossible year to compete. If we aren’t too silly with who we offload we should be able to retain interest in the season.

We kick off the league campaign on 15th August. That’s 5 weeks away. Al decent players will be in training and building up fitness.

No need to rush and end up with an average bunch.

Man United are sorting out their midfield. Once done, probably a few players come available to a Fulham, when they’re done, a Hull, then the Championship teams. It’s the same each year.

I’m only worried if we have big gaps mid August. Not being linked to too many mid July isn’t much to worry about IMHO.

A few things I would like to see happen in the near future. I don't think this needs millions of investment to do.

Can we sign some low-cost domestic or foreign talent to develop? We’ve done it domestically 10 years ago, but I can’t remember us doing it successfully from overseas aside from perhaps Anel.

I’d also like to see a higher-tempo, more exciting style of football. We seem stuck playing this U-shaped football, moving the ball everywhere except through the middle of the final third. I know it’s the most congested and difficult area of the pitch, but it’s also where you need players willing to take the ball, take risks and make things happen - we've been most succesfull with one of these players (Duffy, McGoldrick, Ndiaye and Gibbs-White did). Who is that player for us next season? Hamer?

The club’s image and messaging also need improving. The last five years have brought ownership issues, points deductions, legal cases and a manager who often repeats the same soundbites. I think supporters mainly want honesty and straight talking. Bettis is actually probably the best at that which some people on here will hate.

Many clubs have recovered with similar starts Leicester were top half while we lost 6 on the trot - Palace scored 1 lost 5 finished mid table in PL Forest even Southampton who were only a point in front of us around game 10
The owners Vision was a good one the delivery was shocking
Wilder had the audacity to blame fitness on the preseason yet his team that finished third in the previous season were knackered after an hour and it came back to bite us in the run in
Wilder talks the talk but sadly isn’t able to walk the walk those days are cherished memories now

So it wasn't no miracle just a cluster up by the owners in recruiting the wrong bloke

If someone had told me in the 1990's that our fans would fall to this level in just 30 years, I would have laughed in their face. Even in the early to late 2000's it would have been laughable.

Or maybe some us saw us fuck it up in the 90s, did it again after Warnock in the 00s/10s and would really like the club to no do it again.

Wilder isn't going to take us down, but he may have us mid table mid season and between a clueless board and the anti Wilder bunch that can't wait for him to fail it'll be curtains for him. Think Wednesday had about 3 draws after 13 games and still got close to 60 points. I remember as I bet on them to go down as their squad was pretty crap and dont think they won until November

The point was very clearly made about the point at which Norwich came to Bramall Lane last season. On December 9th after our 1-1 draw, they were 23rd with 14 points from 20 matches and we were 17th with 23 points. Describing their situation as “much worse than ours” may be a slight exaggeration but they were in a proper hole until Clement was appointed.

It should also be pointed out that they finished comfortably ahead of us, gaining 14 points on us over the last 26 matches. If Wilder had the impact at United that Clement had at Norwich we’d have easily finished in the playoffs.
