Thought we played some of the best football we have done all season today.
Thought we should have won.
Thought we were unlucky/ they were lucky today.
Thought the pace of the game was a lot faster than any I have seen so far.
We need to address the problems at the back , yes but they were lucky to go two up.
Thought the one where Che challenged the keeper was no foul.
Thought we started better than them.
Thought Baxter and Coutts played really well together.
Also thought it was wrong to take Coutts off.
Did think we should have took Che off and put Done on.
All the above comes with a thought that because we did not win in the end that most see it different to me and think I'm talking crap and put on the wrong glasses.

Haven't been today because I've had to come and shut our caravan down for the winter.
We could well have played some of the best football of the season today but is that a measure of how good we were today or how shit we've been for the rest of the season?

Che off, Done on and Hammond off and Wallace on would have been the changes I'd have made early in the second half.

I couldn't work out if we were unlucky, having hit the post twice and their keeper made a couple of good saves, or if it was our own fault through not being clinical enough. It was probably a bit of both.

Thought Coutts did well but as the game wore on he was struggling defensively and they had a couple of close shaves just before he went off. James Wallace being a box to box type player gave us that back without too much detriment to our attacking shape

Agree with most of that. I thought that was our best performance of the season. Promising.

But yet again we didn't convert chances into (enough) goals.

Hammond played well.

Long even looked intermittently confident and commanding.

Defending is still an issue. They had acres of space on the edge of our box two or three times before the goal.

We could get murdered at Walsall if we carry on like that.

Yes, me too, very good performance second half, Hammond aside who had a stinker, again, the team all played well, billy is wasted in that role though that what sammon was brought in to do, green shoots...

Great strikes and we can argue all day about closing them down and making challenges, a point gained in my opinion.... We've got to take some positives, came from two back, scored from two set pieces....

This season may be over for autos, but keep the faith...

Yes we did play reasonably well and there were positives

BUT it's a bad sign when a team plays well but still can't win.
We've been slightly better than the opposition in many matches this season but regularly either draw or lose.
We seem to have been unlucky in a few games but again that's a bad sign.
You can't keep blaming bad luck.

Maybe we don't have the leadership and mental toughness to battle out wins.

Thanks for posting this btw bc there's some baffling nonsense elsewhere.

The most important development today I'd say was the pace of the passing. Something he's been talking about all season.

Best sign so far that it might be coming together.

Let's see if it comes apart next week.

I agree with most of that but we can't get away with starting poorly. True we were slightly unlucky because if Sharp gets a smidge more bend on his shot then its in the top corner. Also the shots from Che and Baxter were crackers as well.

There is a decent team amongst SOME of this squad but it won't click til some more of the deadwood have been moved on. At the moment that would be Collins as he is just far too slow and Basham had to clear his mess up on a number of occasions. He can't even get a simple back pass done properly.

The crack cocaine must have slowly been wearing off as you typed this

If you mean second half display, I agree.

If you're including the first half display I couldn't disagree more.

agree on nearly all that execpt

Che's challenge was a foul
Good to see Wallace for a few minutes
Agree that it wasn't Che's day and that Done could have changed it if given 15 -20 minutes
However, we need an inquest into why they had a player totally free on the edge of our box for the first goal

We were much the better team in the 2nd half and I am more encouraged than upset with the performance. When we were on top we needed to keep the momentum by injecting some fresh legs. Wallace was too little too late for me.

Says it all that some are masturbating furiously because we got a point against Southend. It's going to be a long fucking winter mark my words.
Talk us through how you saw the game

Who played well?
Who didn't you rate?

Second half they played quite well and it showed a bit of character to come back from 2 down in the first half - at 0-2 I thought it could get very ugly before the game was out. I was at the Lane end and as well as the 3 shots that hit the post, they had plenty of other opportunities to score - can't help thinking a big centre forward would have successfully connected with a couple of them.

On reflection I think we probably deserved to win but fuck me, Southend, we should be rolling teams over like that if we had serious ambitions for promotion. Said it before and I'll say it again, if we had a decent defence today is a 2-0 win. Sort defence first or we'll get nowhere.

Would agree to appoint. However we have to put it into context having lost in previous weeks to Port Vale, Millwall and Crew and failed to beat Oldham. Unfortunately it is more likely next week at Walsall we will see another performance akin to those games than the second half of today and another defeat. Hope I'm wrong and we start of on a 5 or 6 game winning run. Unfortunately the odd 45 minute decent performance every now and again will not see this happen.

Thought we were bloody awful, personally - but with saving grace of fighting back from the dire situation we'd got ourselves into.

Despite the speculative shots that went near, we never really looked like cracking Southend in the second half. The tempo was better, the desire was upped in the second half, but we were still predictable & one-dimensional mostly (with pretty much everything going through a below par JCR).

Kudos to George, Bash, Coutts & Baxter though, who were all decent.

"Thought we played some of the best football we have done all season today" in a few patches first half and maybe more so second half

"Thought we should have won." - YES, 4-3 would have been fair

"Thought we started better than them" - No, thought they started better and were controlling it, then we started to pick up a bit , then they scored twice. Our midfield was shocking first half.

Other thoughts :
  • thought Collins had a good game and not saying that cos he scored, he was actually a bit of a playmaker today at times and showed some bottle, leadership and passion - was right down at the front today and could see it on his face
  • JCR also had a good one, getting his crosses into the box a lot in the second half, ran his socks off
  • some lovely interplay between Freeman and Adams first half, would like to see more of that
  • already said about Long on the Long thread
  • another piss poor referee, Sharp was getting fouled constantly and the ref did nothing
  • really hope James Wallace can get fully fit, saw a few glimpses of what he can bring to the party when he came on
  • really recommend the Caribbean food stall in the market for pre-match grub if you like spicy food :-)

i'd stick to that type of assessment if I were you;).

First half performance wasn't good, I could only give credit to Adams and Freeman everyone else was so underwhelming but we did well to get back into the game.
The second half we were clearly the better side, but surely its got to worrying that we didn't win when we had control of the game.
We have got to start winning games and anything less has got to be unacceptable from now on.
