I’d agree in terms of our value signings have been largely poor since the second championship season only really cranie stands out as being a decent contributor who we picked up cheap. Before that obviously there’s a long list of players with didzy at the top.I think we both know what each other mean
My point is very simple regarding United
A good player becomes available, we throw our hat into the mix, make all the right noises, then the player demands a certain salary, we pull out of the race, then we sign some donkey who is on 50% - 75% of what the player we wanted was on.
Player on 50% - 75% fits in with our wage structure but offers absolutely sweet FA on the pitch even if he actually gets a game.
If it was a cheap car, or sofa, or carpet, or table, or washing machine it would be seen as false and stupid economy
I’m not sure the trap we fell into was necessarily cost related but rather we actively went out looking for backups believing our first team was good enough. Bogle long term development player/back up to baldock ditto for Brewster, Lowe, Osborn, Robinson even ampadu as a loan signing was a cover player. Some of those players weren’t cheap but they were all long term/backup options which didn’t make us better immediately.
