I see he has his first S24SU man of the match award...

I predicting he'll be the new Monty and divide the fans. He's a similar player, committed, works hard but has dubious quality.

I've only seen him play once, but to me he looked like a clogger who plays physically and simply tries to blast the ball away as soon as possible. I was really, really impressed with McGahey, who seems to want to put it down and play, less so with Alcock.

Alcock is useful of course, especially when we need leaders and are under the pump. Others will have seen him play more than me, but my immediate reaction is doubt when thinking about him playing for a team that (should be) challenging for the league. He makes me nervous when he gets near the ball and we'll be spending more of this season doing the pumping rather than being under it.

Basham is the new Monty...McNulty the new Taylor...JCR the new Brandy....HIgdon the new Shipperley/Porter depending on who you talk to...you lot can fill in the rest....

I'm on the side of 'he was okay, but by no means out man of the match'.

Beaten to numerous headers and had awful distribution, but seemed quite calm and did well under pressure on occasion.

He was out of position and against a couple of very good attackers, so by no means writing him off.

Strange post. Played out of position on Saturday, had a great game, made some brilliant tackles and quite rightly won man of the match.

Everyone knows, Basham is the new Monty :)
Not till I re-watched Saturdays game did I realise how bad (in my opinion) Basham played, Blackpool fans who's club have 14 registered players didn't mind the fact they had lost him.........says it all really.

All those Blackpool players were out of contract and the fans I know would gladly take him, Harris and Howard back tomorrow. As ever, we can't, or shouldn't, judge Basham, Alcock and the team as a whole just yet.

disagree 100% about Alcock.
The lad seems a quality full back from preseason games, never a centre half. On Saturday he was playing out of position and gave 100% and did very well, but at this level why are we playing square pegs in round holes? Eventually playing out of position catches up with you.

We will find out very soon whether NC is belligerent in continuing to play Alcock at CH. IS he making a point here?

Chris Basham is the new Jonathan Hunt - FACT!

Edit: Sorry I thought we were giving new players, ex-player tags...

And why not? Seems like 'fun'. I thought Basham was the new Ian Hamilton.

I'm not going to write a player off without a fair trial but Basham scared me. I saw a non-footballer failing to impose himself on the game in any way.

I'll say no more at this stage but I suffered for ten years. I don't want anymore. Understood, Chris?

Alcock had a fine game on Saturday. He is clearly versatile but if right-back is his best position then he'll make a very decent replacement for Brayford. He's probably better than JB defensively although clearly unlikely to offer as much as him going forward.

I was less impressed than some with McGahey although he is cl young and inexperienced. It showed several times but he certainly has potential.

So long as we don't sign a new Ian Hamilton I don't care

Alcock looks much better than Monty was.

I doubt he will divide the fans.

Doyle is Monty no2

There's some fucking genius scouts on here. I'm going to ring Clough2 tomorrow and tell him that what him and rest of the professional scouting network have been doing is a waste of time and effort. Watching players numerous times, drawing up detailed dossier, using critical data analysis from Opta and all the rest...fuck that just get 90 minutes or less watched and job done!

I find the way in which some posters are talking about some of our players incredible, almost beyond belief. Writing players off after one league game!? It's bonkers.

Have we not learned anything having seen the likes of Murphy and Flynn come through some difficult spells to become top performers for us last year?

May as well tell him you're abolishing the forum as well.

bit pointless watching football if you're not allowed to chat about it surely?

Chatting? That's fine, but making definitive statements about players after seeing barely one game is something else.

The game generates opinions, which is why it is so popular. Having opinion based on no information at all isn't opinion but negativity to push another agenda.

That is one weird post! As much as I try to respect views on here, this one suggests you have little clue on this game called football....

AS I've been saying LSF, it's either blinding ignorance or other agenda motives. Blind ignorance is almost understandable as plenty who watch the game have never played to any level and have no great insight, however if I find myself in that situation with other things I either shut up or talk very generally. Most of what we see on here IMO is very much other agenda stuff. An element seem to want the club to balls up, enjoy the bad times so they can vent their spleen and rag the club/McCabe/game changing investment whatever. And of course, there is always the scapegoat to identify, the 'new monty' or 'new Quinn'.

Do you actually believe this? Do you think that United fans want United to fail so they can moan on a message board?

Do you think that anyone who has complained about Saturday's team selection and performance didn't want us to win that game?

I think they are not exactly happy and overjoyed when we win. This place is like a ghost town after any victory and in meltdown after a defeat or perceived bad news. I'm sure Foxy could back that up with stats as well. So the logical conclusion to draw from that is that a great many prefer to deride the failures rather than celebrate the victories.

I think you could not be more wrong. Even Len wants us to win every game.

It's just easier to talk about setbacks than good results.

I disagree here SEB,what do you put when we win, when all goes well, and what do you put when we lose, when there is all sorts to have a chat, moan or what ever you want to call it about.

Saturdays match gave people a lot to talk about for a numerous of reasons and i for one thought alot of it was warranted, don't get me wrong some have over reacted abit, because just like you say its one match and i'm like you,i'd rather wait a while before i start making rash judgements, but you're going to get that with every fan base, especially one who can get 20,000 fans for a match on t.v.
