Ive backed just about all of the last managers, if you can be arsed youll find threads on here with me defending Blackwell, Wilson, Warnock, Clough, infact all of them except Robson, Weir and now Adkins as its been plainly obvious to me theyre no good and not a long term solution. I agree we have to back some fucker but not this one, we should have stuck with Clough. Now we need to get a new one who can get the best out of his players, not someone relying on past glories with other teams and positive spin.
 
Disagree, the way managers work they take the job with promises and the board don't deliver. Hang on in there, if results go against you, keep quiet get sacked, get paid everything owing to the end of your contract. Get another job confidentially blaming the board.

Weir walked with a rumoured £2m for a few months work and walked into a lucrative job. Nice.
If Weir walked away with £2m why did we struggle to attract a manager when we were offering such a big salary? Even over three years that's a lot for a L1 manager.

I've heard a number of managers being interviewed who've said that most contracts have a clause that if you're sacked, you're only entitled to a set amount of money; usually six months. This is pretty standard in the lower leagues.

If the person responsible for drawing up the contract didn't put such a clause in there he's both negligent and incompetent.

And no club in their right mind would pay off a contract in full, in one lump sum. You pay in instalments and as soon as the sacked manager gets a new job you renegotiate the payments based on the fact that his loss has reduced.

On that basis it's clear you can't tell the difference between a good one and a bad one.

I think it would be great if he walked, then we wouldnt lose any money having to sack him, we'd then have a new manager who can hopefully motivate the players and hed have a chance to build a fresh squad in the summer. Adkins hasnt shown any good managerial skills that Ive seen so why not roll the dice again. People keep banging on like hes the only option but he isnt

Also, if we are skint and cant buy any new players then thats another argument for why adkins walking would be good as hes shown that he cant work with these players and obviously needs players we cant afford so we should be looking at a manger who can motivate players / work with players from lower leagues rather than prem cast offs

I think he's shown at Scunny he can work within a tight budget.

I do agree with your other point though. It's clear he's struggled with a lot of our players and if we're not prepared to fund bringing in new players there's an argument that we should be looking at a more 'Clough-like' manager. It may be too late now but it's something we should have considered more when we recruited him.

Clough seemed to be an old style kick, bollock and bite micro-manager and he assembled a squad that would respond to that.

Adkins seems to be more about players taking responsibility for themselves and I'm not convinced some of our lot are capable of that.

- First off, I think everyone is keen to get where we need to get to. For all his failings I do believe that McCabe wants this club in the PL. Agree with that or not, that is my belief.
- I think the board underestimated the task that was required following the sacking of Clough in the summer. They brought Nigel in, i believe with the sole aim of getting up this year.
- Nigel being as good as I believe he is and as honest as I believe he is, has assessed the squad and gone back to the board and said, look gents, we've got 40-odd professionals here! This is huge for a club in League 1.
- The board have sat up and thought.....holy christ! No wonder the budgets are stretched, we need to have a re-think here.
- Adkins, having been promised a certain remit in the interview to get us up, has had to agree to trimming the squad right down, with limited incomings.
- On the proviso that as long as we do not have a disastrous season, he will be given the summer to make wholesale changes, no matter the division.

Thats just how I see it. I think the board knew that Clough had been a bit too active in the transfer market, but not to the extent identified later. Adkins is purely another victim of the Clough regime, and as much as the board are getting the flack for a poor transfer window, i think the tack being taken is correct in setting up the summer for Adkins to truly put his mark on our club, I just hope he truly gets the opportunity.
