Adkins to get a pop at ending our unbeaten run?

In the summer of 2015 you mean? If so, it’s a difficult one. On the one hand, Wilder has done exceptionally well so far and the logical reaction therefore seems that we should have appointed him. However, I think last season was such a clusterfuck for reasons beyond Adkins that I wonder (a) how well Wilder would have done with that awful squad stuck on contracts and (b) whether we’d have sacked him if he didn’t succeed. The danger then being that we wouldn’t have the benefit of him here this season.


During the summer, I was annoyed we’d sacked Adkins because I didn’t think he got a fair crack given the circumstances last season. I was interested to see how he would do with a chance to rebuild the squad. As it turns out, Wilder has done very well so with hindsight, it’s probably the right call (though none of us know how well Adkins would have done).

I think it's a case of right man at right time for Wilder this season. Last season probably not right but then Wilder would not have signed Hammond, Woolford or Sammon but he would have been hamstrung with a lot of the rest of the squad and whether he could have moved them out wholesale then I don't know. May be fate played a part for once in our favour. We had to have the Adkins season to enable us to get CW at the right time.

People prefer Clough because he did achieve some things. 2 cup semi finals, saving us from relegation and getting in the playoffs were all real achievements. Adkins did worse in every respect.

Both underachieved in a sense, but Clough left a lot of good memories.

Yeah I think the cup runs mask the disappointment of the football on offer during Clough's 2nd season in the league. Generally, I thought there was little between the standard of Clough's football and that of Adkins despite Clough operating in far more favourable circumstances. But he did have that knack of upsetting the big teams in the cups which slightly sweetened the league performance.
