It’s strange that Adkins and Clough are looked on with such disparity. Clough seems to have a lot of fans here still (and a fair share of detractors I know). He had a chance of a complete rebuild having been here the season before and controlling a retained list meaning he had a similar clean slate to Wilder and was afforded the luxury of signing 20 odd players including paying £1.5-2 million for one of them. Adkins inherited a squad not of his choosing, had his star player (Murphy) sold straight away and was without the next best player (Brayford) for most of the season through injury. He was able to sign less players than any other league 1 club during his one season here (Only paying one fee- allegedly £500k). On top of the Murphy sale, he moved out, either on loan or permanently, around 20 players to get the wage bill down during the course of the season. Despite all of that, I think he amassed something like 6 or 7 points less than Clough. Sure he dropped a bollock with Woolford, Hammond and Sammon but Clough gave us James Wallace, Butler, Higdon, Lollipops McCuntly, McGahey, McEveley, Alcock etc.
Overall, they both came up short, Adkins a little more than Clough but in far more difficult circumstances.
I think the one big difference is that a lot of blades just didn’t like him. Didn’t like his clichés and endless positivity when we were so pissed off.
