Said to be available for £3m with a number of Championship clubs interested.
Hopefully we're one of them.
Him and Waghorn for three a peice would be very good business. But that would leave us with five strikers who would all expect regular first team football.
If we sign Armstrong or Waghorn the I'd imagine the other striker will be a loanee or a youngster.
Bolton play hoof ball which wouldn't have suited him at all, he was also played out of position at LM alot there. So we have some people who thing Waghorn is over priced yet ok with paying 3m for a player who spent the first half of last season at Bolton scoring 1 goal, getting recalled and sent to Blackburn in the first division where he did well. Where do I sign
Armstrong is an out and out centre forward, feed him balls through the defence to run onto, he's a totally different player. Friend follows Newcastle rates him highly and on the few times I've seen him, he's always shifting around making runs in-between the defence. Be a good signing imo.So we have some people who thing Waghorn is over priced yet ok with paying 3m for a player who spent the first half of last season at Bolton scoring 1 goal, getting recalled and sent to Blackburn in the first division where he did well. With Armstrong only being 21 years old, as long as he remained prolific at L1 level he'd at least maintain a value of £2.5m+.
Look at Marriott, he's nearly 24 now, had his first prolific season later than Armstrong did and is now being mentioned in the £5m+ bracket. If Armstrong had a full season in L1 last season and scored 20+ he'd probably be valued similarly now.
So I think the risk with Armstrong would be extremely minimal. In the worst case scenario, we loan him out to a suitable L1 club, where he'd score goals, maintain his value and probably even increase it.
But I think he'd do well at Championship level in a decent team and setup.
Not saying he (Armstrong) wouldn’t necessarily do well for us. I would be happy to sign him. But all this talk of future values misses what I believe is the most important point: what they will offer us next season. I think Waghorn has more to offer in that regard, not only in scoring goals, but in his overall contribution to the team and our play. He’d arrive off the back of an excellent season in the Championship, would suit our system and fit in with our squad, can take a mean set piece, plus he’s a left footer. Using the value point, if he replicates his form from last season, that will only go up.
I fancy our chances of promotion much more with Waghorn in the side than with Armstrong. Therefore I think he’s a better signing this season.
That said, I think Armstrong would make a good long term replacement for Sharp, just as Marriott would.
Must admit, I'd take Armstrong and (Keiffer) Moore very happily over Waghorn for broadly the same outlay (though obviously not insofar as wages are concerned). They seem like the type of players Wilder would get plenty out of. I just think Waghorn is terribly overpriced given his age combined with a lack of consistency over a number of seasons.
If Chris Wilder doesn’t consider Armstrong a target at this point, he must have one hell of a trick up his sleeve.
Worth a punt all day long isn't it?
'Brooks money' in the bank. Need to bring in new attacking prospects/assets. Armstrong fits the bill perfectly.
I don’t see it. He’s a 1 in 2 striker in League 1. He had a spell in the Championship and hasn’t delivered anything that would suggest he’s really “worth a punt” at £3m.
Scored 20 in 40 L1 when he was 18 years old.
Marriott's scored 27 in 44 in L1 at the age of 23 and he's commanded a £5m+ fee.
They're similar players in a number of ways, but Armstrong is younger and more versatile.
Blackburn had him last season and their fans seem very keen to re-sign him.
I believe he's had two different spells in the Championship and not really been outstanding. Jury's still out on whether he can do it at this level. Therefore, I'd expect him to be less than Marriott.
Ok cheers, would of been an added bonus but I would still sign him for a reasonable fee.No, Armstrong was at Coventry in 2015/16, when Clarke was at Bury.
