We don’t need another young striker. We have Woodburn to fill that role.
We need a goal scorer and epxerienced player IMHO
We've got more than enough experience up front.
Woodburn's age isn't really relevant either because he's only a loan. From our perspective he might as well be 28. The reason to sign young attackers would be to build a squad, plan for the future and replace the asset we've just sold (Brooks).
We need a proven goal scorer and finished article now. Straight into the side. Someone who’s done it before and on a regular basis.
I think you're being fanciful: the sort of player you're describing generally costs around £10-15m and requires wages beyond our means.

We shall see. Some do yes...some don’t.
It’s a matter of knowing the contract situation of players and their desire to play for Wilder and United.
A facet often overlooked by people. Wilder is very highly regarded in the fame.
Watch McGoldrick, if he stays fit we will be fending offers of £3-5m in January and as he's on a short contract we might struggle to keep him
Another experienced player ...really !! ..we have have more experience than most squads on the championship! ! ..we still need younger fresh blood ..if that is another so be it ....We don’t need another young striker. We have Woodburn to fill that role.

I hate the phrase ‘missed a trick’. It implies Wilder is a bit of an idiot, like he’s some naive fucker who’s wet behind the ears.I'm with Ricky on this one.
Still only 21, already has plenty of experience (albeit more successfully at league one level) but would surely only get better under Wilder.
Looks pretty nippy to me and would be a constant menace for opposition defenders. Also looks strong with both feet.
Not the biggest of blokes but neither is Messi (and no I'm not comparing him directly with Messi but you know where I'M coming from).
Reported to be available at £3M - got to be worth a punt and a younger version of Billy.
Think we'll have missed a trick with this one.
But do we know how many of CW's character, attitude, fitness and skill criteria Armstrong has (or has not) met?I hate the phrase ‘missed a trick’. It implies Wilder is a bit of an idiot, like he’s some naive fucker who’s wet behind the ears.
Watch/read Moneyball. It doesn’t quite apply to football as baseball is far more stats based but Wilder, like Bassett, knows how to identify the key requirements for a player to fit our system and sees things that some other managers don’t. Like with Clarke or Fleck. You say "some do yes...some don't"
Can you think of any examples that don't?
The reason I ask is that if a club has the player you're describing; (an experienced, proven player with a good record) why would they charge any less than say £10m, if that's the going rate?
Likewise, if we had an offer accepted on said hypothetical player, why wouldn't he demand £30k+ a week, it that's the going rate?
I'm not trying to piss on your chips, I'm just doubtful that such a player exists: I think we're going to have to take some kind of gamble.
Yeah, I get the sentiment, it’s the phrase that winds me up. People (not just you by any means, I’ve read it a lot on here, your usage was just the straw that broke the camel’s back) use it without realising it’s quite derogatory, it doesn’t just mean you’ve missed out, it means you’ve missed out because you’re not properly at it.Apologies BushBlade.
Please be assured that in no way do I think Wilder is an idiot, naïve or wet behind the ears (far from it).
Just my opinion on a particular player and it may well turn out that he fails to deliver and we were right not to try and sign him.
Alternatively, he could improve year on year, score a few goals and be worth a few more £££ in future.
Just an opinion but non of us have a crystal ball do we and every signing can be a bit of a gamble.

I look at what Leeds have just paid for Bamford and I honestly can’t see how he’s worth it. His agent should be negotiating Brexit he’s that good. Unless Bielsa transforms him, he doesn’t represent value for money. He’s living off the back of one good season. That’s the kind of signing we will avoid (watch him get 30+ as Leeds smash the league now I’ve said that).
Personally, I’m not sure who we could pick up at a price we can afford but there could be someone who’s decent, that could do what Wilder wants, who just isn’t fancied by a new manager, whose talents aren’t being properly utilised, or is at a club where the manager isn’t that bothered about fitness (like Clough or Wilson, apparently). One that if coached and used properly, would be far better than he currently seems.
Yes if you like reading (I’m not taking the piss, one of my mates just doesn’t even though he’s intelligent) because it’s a bit more detailed on the thinking behind it. Although I guess it depends on how interested you are in ‘metrics’.I've seen Moneyball, though admittedly I've not read it. Is it worth reading if you've already seen the film?
I completely agree with your logic, and I was trying to say that we can't afford the finished product (e.g. Bamford) so we'll have to utilise the system you described and take gambles on unfancied or untried options (e.g. Clarke).
The idea that there is a player out there who has all the attributes we need in a addition to a good record at Championship level, all within our budget is fanciful IMO - that's the opinion I was trying to counter.
