a few out of contract names

Why would you think that? It would go against pretty much everything CW has stated and done to date.

There is absolutely no need to blow that sort of money on a contracted player - there will be more than enough players able to do a job in the the Champ available for far less or nothing.

Because Chris Wilder is a smart fella and knows that free's will only get you so far, and in today's market you need to spend a decent amount of money for a good player I'm afraid.

Knowing what Adams, Murphy, Maguire etc cost, we know that they all went for around £2mil plus and we would want players of that calibre

What a shame that is, I'd read he was back in training too. Great player.

I think he is but only very light stuff. The meeting is apparently to review whether he's able to step it up. I initially read it as though it were a meeting to assess whether he's able to continue with his career although having read a couple of other articles it doesn't appear to be quite as drastic as that. Still, he's a long way from being able to play again. He's out of contract in the summer and Brentford are considering whether to offer him an extension if he can prove his fitness - it certainly doesn't fit with their data based recruitment policy

No you don't - a player's transfer value depends on their contract status. Players inc. Ronaldinho, Beckham and (Brazilian) Ronaldo have all moved clubs on frees at some stage of their careers - applying your logic, do you feel they are worse players than Che Adams?

CW will be given a budget for the season - it's up to him how he allocates it between transfer fees and salaries but while stating the obvious, the more that it blown on transfer fees, the less is available for salaries.

No not at all, without researching were most of those transfers towards the end of those players careers? I am not disagreeing you can get good players for free, however if Wilder wants to bring in younger players who are rated highly in this league, chances are he will need to spend some money, if they were good players they will have been kept in contract most likely by their current clubs.

Sorry to labour the point and whilst I'm sure some transfer fees will be paid over summer, I very much doubt any will be paid that are anywhere close to the £3m figure you mentioned. Utd will operate on an increased budget next year but it will be miles away from those of some of the other teams in the league, especially those who drop from the Prem (or those funded by Tuna sales!). Apologies for the awful pun but CW will be fishing in a very different pool to them. I'm happy to be proven wrong but when fees are paid over summer, I would expect them to be hundreds of thousands rather than millions and Utd simply won't be able to afford young, highly rated, Champ level players who have >18 months left on their contract.

I signed David Villa and Kaka on free transfers when playing FIFA the other day. They were both a steal on 12k/ week each. Can we go in for them?

Big signings tend to come with big wage demands. Chris Wilder has already said he doesn't want big disparities in salaries disrupting the squad harmony. It is a very relevant point and probably played a big part in rocking the boat at our S6 friends.
