Players out of contract as of summer 2017

Frazier Campbell
Zeki Fryers
Lloyd Isgrove
Sammy Ameobi
Alan Judge
Eric Lichaj
Danny Ward
Cyrus Christie
Hope Akpan
Louis Thompson
Ross Turnbull
Jay Spearing
David Wheater
Liam Trotter
Yaser Kasim
Filipe Morais
Conor McLaughlin
Graham Carey
Aaron Pierre
Kris Commons

Granted Campbell will be on silly money and Judge will be heading to whoever goes up from the Championship. other than that there are a few names in there that are achievable. fingers crossed Bolton stay down..... the website I used isn't great for development players so people like Riley don't show, Im sure CW has all his targets earmarked already for either out come promotion of non promotion

Danny Ward is the stand out on that list. Gettable, suitable and local too. Didn't think he was out of contract because Rotherham rejected decent bids for him, which is unlike them.

Ameobi's probably the next best shout for us, I'd be interested in taking him on a free.

Fryers could be borderline realistic, I'd take him if so.

Paul Coutts
Chris Basham
Kieron Freeman

Those three will all be offered new contracts at the end of the season... Why wouldn't the case be the same with the list above?

Wilder has already stated that talks about contracts will be suspended until it's clear which division we're playing in next season. Completely the right thing to do, and it's good to know our manager isn't getting giddy about this until he knows what the future holds.

As usual, faith in Wilder. Like all of us CW will realise what's at stake, so no probs with his approach UTB

I believe Danny Ward now has another 12 months due to a clause invoked by the club. If he hadn't he would've been sold

Fair to say tho, he'll be on his bike this summer imo. Injured at the moment I think

Always liked judge as a player dunno how similar he is to some of our other midfielders.

Ward would be a good signing - always had talent but apparently struggled with dedication at Huddersfield. Type of player wilder could make something out of imo

I'm out of contract and available, come to think of it i never had a contract. Could do a job though, maybe Captain Blade or sommert.

Sharp is also out of contract I'm a little confused about our contract situation. Wilder said earlier in the season our important OOC players had extensions triggers in them then later on said any talksnwould be on hold. Maybe a further year has been triggered but at the end of the season they will talk about improving the terms of those deals.

I'm sure most will be offered deals. In the same way I imagine Fleck was offered a new deal by Coventry in the summer but he chose us.

I think he would be a good fit, as he would be a huge improvement on Done and that worked with Billy. Would give us balance up top.

Wouldn't be adverse to any of these dependent on what formation CW is likely to play next season.

They're mine from that list

A few technically good players in your list but Isgrove aside, not many that fit the 'young, hungry, improvable' criteria and some e.g. Campbell, Commons, Morais who'd see it as a final, lucrative pay day, which is precisely the sort of recruitment that helped land the club in the L1 mess it's struggled to get out of for so long. I suspect there's much better value to be had elsewhere in the market.

Kasim I just don't get and perhaps he's another hark back to the Swindon team that got to the play off final who were made to look like world beaters by the horrific side Clough assembled (Harris, Alcock, McEverley, Davies S, Davies B, Flynn, McNulty, McGahey etc), but actually turned out to be a group of overhyped, very average players (also see Nathan Byrne & Ben Gladwin).

Whats happened to Alan Judge? At one point he was being talked about in big money transfers from Brentford. Now off the radar.

*Used the power of Google to answer my own question - serious injury, resumed light training last month. Shame - always rated him.

Good point about Judge. Clough attempted to sign him but at the time the allure of the Championship was stronger than remaining in Division 1. A good technical player who'd fit in well with our current squad.

Yeah, that was the name that jumped out at me when I first saw it.

He'd be ideal in our set up.

Be interesting how players of his ilk will view us IF we're in the Championship next season. He is a player who top end teams will be interested in - will these players see us as a risk (ie relegation, bottom half obscurity) or will they see the potential/momentum.

Ok so I have done a mini list and includes a number of players we have come across this year and many have been mentioned already. Judging by how Wilder and co do business I imagine some are on the radar

Gregory - Forward - Millwall (replaces Clarke)
Ward - Forward - Rotherham (replaces Done)
Watkins - Forward - Barnsley available on free with no compo needed
Ripley - GK - Boro and in team of the year. Probabky available on loan if given a chance to grab the shirt.
McLoughlin - Fleetwood - RWB however can play CB
Vela - Bolton - CM - adds bite and good competition
Cullen - Bradford - CM - Tricky as a loan from West Ham but He's produced and will step up.
Morsy - Wigan - Let's see who's reading...
McCarthy - CB - Southampton on loan at Walsall. Says he's out of contract but can't take that as gospel. A leader and another ready to step up
Riley RWB - Loan Man Utd. Imagine he will be back
Chapman - Loan again. Depends on where Boro end up but I could see this happening.

What I've come to realise about Wilder is that it's not just the type or quality of player he's interested in, it will also be about the qualities the player brings that makes him fit in with the rest of the squad. The notion of 'rocking the boat' doesn't sit easily with Wilder, so they have to be what you might call, good eggs. What I've seen of Judge I've been impressed by. It's funny how perceptions change though. There was a time when I thought we would only buy players who were everyone else's cast-offs, and that players like Judge would move elsewhere. Since Wilder was appointed we've shifted that bar and now search for players of genuine quality, something that all Blades have longed to see. I know there have been a few players who have been signed for a specific job, but in the main the quality thresh-hold has definitely improved where the Blades are concerned.

Not bothered about Frazier Campbell to be honest and not sold on Danny Ward. His form has dropped off, admittedly Rotherham, are poor, but he's never been prolific.

Stand out names from that list for me are; Isgrove, Ameobi, Spearing, Kasim, McLaughlin.

Alan Judge wouldn't interest you? Surely the best player on that list by some distance.

What's all this about hungry players, folks? Just sign anyone on the list and then ban them from eating for 24 hours before the match. They'll certainly be hungry enough then.

Yes but with this one we only give him a one year deal. Not some daft 3 year contract with the option of another year regardless of how fit he is.

Its hard to speculate currently as we have no idea who has the 1 year extension clauses etc.

For me I wouldn't mind a crack at Danny Ward, Judge is also a good player. No-one seems to be looking whos out of contract at the premiership clubs who could work there way down?

I think if we can get over the line and go up, there will be astute signings, however I just feel there will be one big money big name signing £3m plus

Why would you think that? It would go against pretty much everything CW has stated and done to date.

There is absolutely no need to blow that sort of money on a contracted player - there will be more than enough players able to do a job in the the Champ available for far less or nothing.

Alan Judge is having a meeting this week about his medical status following a double leg break 12 months ago. A great player at his best but a Clough-style signing at the moment.
