A few observations from the stats (Swans):
- unlike last week, we cannot possibly mount any argument that we were unlucky. We lost the xG by 1.17 v 0.40, with the second half xG below 0.10, and with no shots on target at all.
- the quality of our passing was the lowest for a long time, with the team average below 75%, and only one player over 80% (Seriki). As always these stats need context, and a team tactic of getting the ball forward more quickly will inevitably have lower pass completion stats than a team which plays it around the back 4 for half the game. But they are still very much lower than you’d expect.
- we made only 4 key passes (passes leading to a shot) two from Burrows, and one each from Bindon and One. Burrows also made most crosses (8 out of 16) and most accurate crosses. Creativity was pitiful and Hamer looked lost. O’Hare should never play wide.
- in line with the above, Campbell had no shots, no dribbles, no key passes, no crosses, and attempted just 5 passes. Cannon had exactly the same stats but with just 3 passes attempted and 5 touches overall. The disconnect between the midfield and attack very stark.
- defensively it gets no better. Robbo won no tackles, made no interceptions, and won just one header. Bindon won one tackle with no interceptions, and won 4 headers.
- Peck is becoming a mystery. He won most tackles, won most headers (surprisingly) and had most shots. Yet his lost possession and aimless amble back for their goal rightly caused the anger of Cooper (who is normally as mild mannered as Penry).
I hope the team is transformed both in terms of personnel and approach in the next week or so. Millwall are a very strong team, and I fear the worst next week.
I’m off for a lie down.
