A few observations from the stats:

- let's start positively, with our centre mid demonstrating real bite (possibly at the expense of other aspects) with Choud having joint most tackles, and second most interceptions, with Vini winning most aerial duels. This undoubtedly assisted us in keeping a clean sheet, the basis upon which the first half of the season was such a success;

- our passing stats were poor. Arguably bringing in new players who have barely met each other, playing in a new formation, is going to take time to click. But aside from out centre halves (who will always have high pass completion stats for passing to each other), we had only one player over 80% - which is considerably lower than our average and what we would expect. I wonder if Vini and Choud are not an especially balanced pairing - with Arb, Peck and Davies offering better passing options alongside one of them;

- again being positive, Harry Clarke was the player with the highest pass completion stats, and he also won 4 aerial duels (joint second most), two tackles, four clearances etc as well as making our best cross. I like Gilchrist but Clarke certainly offers a more progressive option. Anel (11) and Robinson (8) both had high defensive contribution stats but I still fear that we need a stronger defensive unit - and hope the new signing can bolster a central defence that must be tiring after playing every game over a difficult period.

- offensively, playing Brewster as a no 10 / withdrawn forward certainly meant he was constantly in the game, with six successful defensively contributions, as well as most shots (and a valuable contribution for the goal). However moving O'Hare from that position did limited his ability to influence the game (no shots, no dribbles, no crosses etc). We only had four key passes all match, and four crosses, which against an ailing team, showed a distinct lack of creativity. I'm looking forward to Hamer's return.

Overall, a key away win (two points gained on the plane pointers) which was vital to get confidence back, and over time you would expect the understanding to build across the team as the new guys settle in. A night to be happy!!

Thanks Cool, interesting as always.

Any views on Cannon or BBD so far?

Great summary - thank you. After last Friday, the result trumps performance all day long. It's a promotion race, not a beauty pageant.

Cannon certainly had a more effective game (possibly a low bar) with 2 shots (one on target) one key pass, one successive dribble and of course the key assist. BBD's stats not as strong, but he scored - which is all that really matters! Neither won an aerial duel which is a modest concern.

Unsurprisingly we have our best run of results when we have a settled team playing in a settled system. Our first year up under Wilder demonstrated the power and impact of 11 players all understanding their role and working together as a team.

It’s hard over a long 46 game season to maintain a settled side, especially with injuries, but with three other teams looking especially strong (sadly especially the Dirties) we really need to bed down the newbies, rebuild our defensive core strength (once Souttars twin brother arrives) and build the understanding which was missing toddy - but which we had in spades pre Xmas.

Wilder has done it before so let’s hope we can now maintain the necessary form to battle our way into the top two. Anything but the bloody abject misery of the playoffs !!!!

I agree that moving O'hare into a much less productive position was a very odd decision, especially given our most creative player was missing, and the individual stats for O'hare showed how the wider role suits him far less,

But being positive (and fully accepting that Brewster has in no way turned out to be the £20m goal scoring machine we all hoped for) over the past month or so, Brewster has played a valuable team role, showing (touch every scrap of wood) the ability to play a fair amount of minutes on the pitch, including scoring a key goal, and contributing to the winner yesterday.

Thanks for that. It’s noticeable that O’Hare is “lost” in his current role
