A few observations from the stats:

- if I can first be forgiven a subjective indulgence, on Saturday we played a well organized strong physical team, which we struggled to cope with, resulting in a poor performance and a loss. Tonight we chose to play the same 11 against a well organized strong physical team, which we struggled to cope with, resulting in a poor performance and a loss. I understand that sometimes after a bad performance, you send the same team back out fired up to demonstrate that they are can play better. If that was the plan, it backfired badly, as we looked lethargic, and lacked dynamism, structure and understanding, especially in the first half.

- back on the stats, Anel was our top performer with 12 successful defensive contributions (tackles, clearances and interceptions) compared to Robbo with 3, second most aerial duels won (behind Peck) but also with 2 key passes, and our highest pass completion rate (91%, Robbo with 76%) and even one successful dribble. Although Holding looked off the pace when he came on, I wonder if his time has arrived, as Robbo just looked lost in the last 10 minutes or so, and almost gave up.

- although I was frustrated by his end product most of the match, Burrows had most crosses (11 with 3 accurate) as well as 3 key passes, and second most defensive contributions with 6. Seriki got into some good positions, and attempted 6 crosses, but none accurate. He also made just 2 successful defensive contributions. Time for a rest?

- offensively Hamer (who I still think is better alongside O’Hare) made second most crosses (10 with 2 accurate), 2 key passes and a shot. Rak Sakhi in his 45 mins had most shots (5) most successful dribbles and a shot (if you can call it that!). Brewster had 4 shots and 2 key passes. BBD and Campbell had games to forget.

- In his 32 minutes on the pitch Cannon touched the ball 6 times (the fewest of anyone) with one off target shot, no key passes and no dribbles, O’Hare, who came on at the same time, had 21 touches, 2 shots and 2 key passes. Given the way in which Moore added so much more than Cannon when he came on against Oxford, I thought it may have made more sense to bring him on?

- in more general terms, our xG was 1.76 vs 0.52, and we dominated most team stats. Although Millwall created more “big chances” and it was a great finish. And a random stat, they committed 18 fouls to our 5 but generously only got 1 yellow card.

I try to be positive, but I feel more frustrated tonight than I have for a while, as it seemed so predictable as soon as the team was announced (I even had a bet on!). Plymouth gave us a hard game at home and we can’t take them lightly. So we need to freshen up the team, go back to proven combinations (Vini/Peck, Hamer/O’Hare) and, as always, get behind the team!

Let’s be right. We also should have had a penalty tonight.

If I was Chief tonight I’d be telling young Sam he’s ex-communicated from the tribe!

I was amazed Wilder didn't freshen up the team, starting BBD and Brewster looked puzzling pre match and so it proved

BBD was lost as a right winger as indeed he has since we signed him
Hamer is a number 10

I like Peck.

But this team needs to be more on the front foot.

For the next game I’d be looking at:

Cooper
Seriki Anel Robbo/Holding Burrows
Souza Hamer
Rak-Sakyi O’Hare Brereton-Diaz
Campbell

We’ve really got to go for it far more now.

All this cagey stuff has got us so far but we need to be able to dominate teams.

Having Peck and Choudhury there isn’t working. I’d have Souza back in now and just be more attacking.

It’s time now. We need to pick a team that can score goals.

Similarly, JRS was having an impact on the right... and then got moved to the left and fizzled out 🤷‍♂️

I think he was naively wanting to prove a point, especially in the wake of his rant against some sections of our supporters.

To be fair to Wilder, it’s a difficult balance. Football is a team game and if he chops and changes too much, we lose team work and understanding and would likely underperform- yet if he doesn’t rotate enough then he could be criticised for having a tired team and cause injuries (as Farke was getting grief for last week).

Likewise, I like us to be true to own formation and plans, and prefer us to let other teams worry about us, rather than change what we do to try to stop our opposition (like we tried to do against Leeds away and which Wilder was criticised for) but when we play a physical team of giants whose only tactic is lobbing the ball into the penalty area, then arguably we should include players to combat that.

But to my mind bringing back Vini, as a strong tall physical player, would have been playing to our strengths (our results are far better when he plays), and replacing Robinson with Holding is simply recognizing that Robbo needs a rest, and Holding is a better defender.

So I remain a little bemused by Wilder’s apparent stubbornness - but I can see that his team selections do demonstrate consistency of approach which is usually applauded.

If we do manage promotion! We don't want Diaz ( won't apply if we fail as his wages would be too much) hes a most overated player can see why soton wanted him out.Not critical of his workrate ! Just not good enough.Forest had Blackburns pants down selling him
To them for 9million ! Can't beat a man and first touch is poor.
Rak sacki not good enough either !
He's good at beating himself.
So we have two loans who aren't good enough,Clark and Gilchrist injured.Wheres the strength indebth there.
If
it is playoffs are we good enough to win them ! Forgetting our past record which really dunt apply.Disappointment is my overriding emotion .
Never at one point did i think we were good enough! Pigs and Coventry gave me a beleaf I was wrong ! I was right we ain't good enough !.
I'm not a Keiffer Moore fan ( he's a donkey and can't run) why can't he get some game time he has a 3 year contract ! Yes a 3 year contract for a player who for me looks finished.
Frustrated like most blades ! as i said I didn't think we were good enough ! To get where we were a week ago and blow it as we have is just gauling.
