A few observations from the stats:
- if I can first be forgiven a subjective indulgence, on Saturday we played a well organized strong physical team, which we struggled to cope with, resulting in a poor performance and a loss. Tonight we chose to play the same 11 against a well organized strong physical team, which we struggled to cope with, resulting in a poor performance and a loss. I understand that sometimes after a bad performance, you send the same team back out fired up to demonstrate that they are can play better. If that was the plan, it backfired badly, as we looked lethargic, and lacked dynamism, structure and understanding, especially in the first half.
- back on the stats, Anel was our top performer with 12 successful defensive contributions (tackles, clearances and interceptions) compared to Robbo with 3, second most aerial duels won (behind Peck) but also with 2 key passes, and our highest pass completion rate (91%, Robbo with 76%) and even one successful dribble. Although Holding looked off the pace when he came on, I wonder if his time has arrived, as Robbo just looked lost in the last 10 minutes or so, and almost gave up.
- although I was frustrated by his end product most of the match, Burrows had most crosses (11 with 3 accurate) as well as 3 key passes, and second most defensive contributions with 6. Seriki got into some good positions, and attempted 6 crosses, but none accurate. He also made just 2 successful defensive contributions. Time for a rest?
- offensively Hamer (who I still think is better alongside O’Hare) made second most crosses (10 with 2 accurate), 2 key passes and a shot. Rak Sakhi in his 45 mins had most shots (5) most successful dribbles and a shot (if you can call it that!). Brewster had 4 shots and 2 key passes. BBD and Campbell had games to forget.
- In his 32 minutes on the pitch Cannon touched the ball 6 times (the fewest of anyone) with one off target shot, no key passes and no dribbles, O’Hare, who came on at the same time, had 21 touches, 2 shots and 2 key passes. Given the way in which Moore added so much more than Cannon when he came on against Oxford, I thought it may have made more sense to bring him on?
- in more general terms, our xG was 1.76 vs 0.52, and we dominated most team stats. Although Millwall created more “big chances” and it was a great finish. And a random stat, they committed 18 fouls to our 5 but generously only got 1 yellow card.
I try to be positive, but I feel more frustrated tonight than I have for a while, as it seemed so predictable as soon as the team was announced (I even had a bet on!). Plymouth gave us a hard game at home and we can’t take them lightly. So we need to freshen up the team, go back to proven combinations (Vini/Peck, Hamer/O’Hare) and, as always, get behind the team!
