A few observations from the stats:

- our dream team central midfield were both very strong. Peck had a great game with most aerial duels won (6), twice as many shots as anyone else, joint most clearances, and a pass completion rate of 90% with one key pass. Whilst Vini won most tackles (6) and second most clearances.

- Hamer was fairly judged man of the match, with most key passes, most successful dribbles, twice as many crosses as anyone else, third most successful tackles, as well as playing a key role in creating as well as scoring the vital first goal.

- bearing in mind the focus on our central defence, I looked at the Holding/Anel combination. The one stat which stood out (apart from a clean sheet for the first time since beating the Wendies) was that they both had a calmness in possession. Anel has always had good progressive passing stats, but Holding added an almost Norwood-esque ping quality with 14 long/cross field balls attempted with 11 completed - resulting in him having our highest pass completion rate of 95%. He certainly showed from a footballing perspective why he played so often for Arsenal. Choud also deserves mention with joint most defensive contributions (with Vini)

- on a more critical note, whilst I still think Brewster can be a good team contributor, playing the role of the number 10 isn’t his best. He had the lowest overall contribution stats yesterday, and O’Hare (whilst not his best contribution) added more. I would still like us to get back to a team with Hamer and O’Hare able to work together as a creative force.

- on a broader front, we had an xG of 1.31, whilst keeping a desperate Cardiff team to just one “big chance’, with the team stats showing a deserved victory. We aren’t back to our best, but it was an important win, less so for automatic (I just can’t see it) but more to get back into a winning mindset for the playoffs, with Holding’s addition perhaps being a key shift.

Thanks Cool

I still worry about Choud as a right back, as his positional awareness is poor with Cardiff getting behind him a couple of times, once requiring a desperate tackle which was thankfully well timed. Is Gilchrist available soon? Whilst not great going forward, he was part of a great defensive unit pre Xmas.

Our rise to the top of the table before Christmas was very much based on a very solid back 6, of Cooper, Anel and Souttar, Burrows and Gilchrist, with Vini just in front. We then started to struggle as Souttar, then Vini and Gilchrist, all got injured, with the replacements all being poorer defensively than the originals (Robbo for Souttar, Clarke for Gilchrist, Choud for Vini). The closer we get back to that first 6 (with Holding in for Souttar) the better our chances in the play offs.

Most interesting/depressing stat for me last night was our first shot was in the 29th minute (Vini hitting it over from distance). We have loads of the ball and and are generally pretty crap at doing anything constructive with it

Good spot! The first six shots of the game were all by Cardiff, showing how slowly we came out of the blocks! Oddly from the 29th minute, the next six shots were all from us, as we turned it around.

A forum contributor on the ‘ Holding ‘ thread said he didn’t win one header vs their #9. I didn’t notice when I watched it but it’s concerning if true.

Thanks for the homework! I am struggling to easily identify aerial duels specifically between Holding and their number 9 without rewatching the game, but his stats show

- Opta report he has won 10 out of 17 aerial duels (58%) - but I appreciate they could have all been against other players!

- Opta report he has won 5 out of 6 ground duels (83%)

- Footmob report he has had 178 touches, of which 160 were successful (90%)

He certainly isn’t as commanding in the air as Souttar (over 80%) who was exceptional and at one time had the highest aerial duel win rate in Europe! But he has better figures than Anel, and has a reading of the game which I suggest is better than Souttar’s. And his passing for a centre half in this division is excellent.

When holding went off they had three free headers in our six yard box
I didn't notice any before that

Holding has been a no brainier all year, just one person not seeing it

Just to add, they didn’t have a number 9, but if the poster meant Meite, number 19, he won 58% of headers. So he was pretty effective in the air but not concerningly so. And he had a shockingly bad pass completion rate of 23% so even those headers won didn’t cause any problems.

Can you add our best for comparison as I can recollect we only managed it 4 times and this game mirrors the majority this season statistically

Can you clarify what stat you are seeking? What did we manage only 4 times?
