Looking at the table at this stage (14 or 15 games to go depending on the team, so roughly two-thirds of the way through the season), and some real interesting stats pop out.

  • Despite their defence being more than twice as stingy as anyone else in the league, Burnley have only scored more goals (39) than ONE team in the entire top half (Blackburn - 37)
  • The number of points between 1st-placed Leeds (69) and 5th-placed Blackburn (48), is exactly the same as between Blackburn and 24th-placed Luton (27) - 21 points
  • The lowest number of drawn matches is 6, shared between ourselves, Blackburn, Watford and Luton
  • Although they are 8th in the table, our city neighbours have only conceded 3 goals fewer than bottom of the league Luton
  • Our earned points of 69 after 32 games (thats points gained, not including the points deduction), puts us at roughly 2.15 points-per-game earned. Were we to maintain that rate to the end of the season, we would be on course for ~97 points after having 2 deducted (around 99.18 points earned). That final tally would have been enough to win the Championship in 8 of the last 10 editions of the competition (beaten only by Wolves in 2018 (99), and Burnley in 2023 (101))

Great numbers, thank you, Shadota

Whilst an outlier this season, I'm afraid the disconnect is likely to become the norm. Generally, the relegated clubs and previous season's relegated clubs will be ahead of the rest.

The rest are almost indistinguishable from one another. The pigs could finish anywhere between 5th and 14th, and no-one would be surprised. The thought of them in the play-offs is horrible.

At the bottom, the promoted teams will clearly be involved most seasons, with the odd surprise package, i.e. Luton.

The days of the championship being the most entertaining league for an armchair / neutral fan will recede faster than Bannan's hairline.

Shadota, you should get a job as statistician on The Times' Game supplement. Great Monday reading.
