This is the perfect analysis - it's all about the uncertainty and this shows that the VAR system cannot rule to such fine margins, there was no clear and obvious error by the officials. The "clear and obvious error" here came from a bloke in a closed room miles from the action overinterpreting results from a system that did not have sufficent spatial or temporal resolution.

What did Warnock used to say about understanding the rules, not the game? The offside rule was never, never intended to work to an implied precision of a few centimetres. Six inches would have been the absolute best that could be acheived by eye, probably more like a foot.


Keep VAR by all means but use it intelligently and for the right reasons but most of all, be true to the beautiful game.

So in conclusion anything less than 8" the length of my cock,should not be tampered with by VAR,this is a good yardstick to use.

In my case it's more of a rule of thumb

With VAR we need to use the letter of the law... literally the letter of the law of the UK.

Is it beyond reasonable doubt? - if no - the goal stands.

Just forget drawing lines. Take a still from when the ball is played - is it obviously offside? - yes or no? When you get to the stage where you're drawing lines and guessing which body part is furthest forward you're going far beyond the reason that the offside rule was brought in.

TV cameras work on a frame rate of 50 frames per second.

VAR outputs to the broadcaster at 50 FPS, however there are a number of cameras that capture 200+ FPS from what I understand. The thick lines drawn are for our benefit and give an indicative view. In reality the lines drawn are a pixel wide and not clearly visible on a TV.

For those saying that VAR in other countries works much better, the same thing happened to Lewandowski in the Bundesliga:
