So Usain Bolt can run 100 meters in under 10 seconds - lets assume Lundstrum running down the wing at a tenth that speed - that's 10 meters in 10 seconds or 1 meter per second. TV cameras work on a frame rate of 50 frames per second. So Lundstrum would move 1 meter divided by 50 between each frame, that's 2cm or just under an inch. It's come across to me as though the VAR teams want to appear clever by claiming they're now able to judge players offside by the slightest fraction. This is being done without any understanding of how the technology actually works. The maths is so stunningly simple too, and it hasn't even accounted for blur in the picture.

you are correct and he's moving faster than that so it's even worse

And the speed that the foot connects with the ball maybe anyone of 3 frames. 2.5 inches. Add in the factor of blur and it can't be used for small potential infringements.

I posted this in another thread. I think it would solve the problems we are having with VAR.

The camera not being in line creates an inaccuracy. The pixelated image creates an inaccuracy. The 50fps that VAR works at creates an inaccuracy. The timing of the ball leaving the players foot creates an inaccuracy.

The level of inaccuracy should be calculated to a distance. Then that distance is depicted in the thickness of the lines to build a tolerance either side. If the two lines overlap at all then it is within the goldilocks zone and should be deemed level. Thats how VAR should work.

Put the line in the right place and not through the defenders knee and shoulder and you don't need a maths degree.

Add into that the inaccuracy of when the ball was played, it's even more bollocks. Have they got VAR zoomed in to when the passer plays the ball? Is it when his foot hits the ball or when the ball leaves his foot? How can a camera get the right angle for either?
 
So in conclusion anything less than 8" the length of my cock,should not be tampered with by VAR,this is a good yardstick to use.
Nice idea but it may cause a bit of trouble from the namby pamby pc brigade when they use that as part of the review system 😯
 
This also doesn’t take into account the potential for defenders stepping up... highly unlikely that the whole back line are travelling at 34.97kmph but the 20cm figure could be significantly higher taking into account defender movement.

I’ve got an idea....

what if VAR was only used to “assist” the referee when he had doubts about a “match changing” decision that he could not resolve through discussion with his other 3 officials who are seeing it live, like him?

What if the decision to use VAR was his and his alone, rather than a voice in his tab telling him he was going to be checked up on?

What if he had the power (balls) to say “Ta VAR, but I’m sticking with my original decision”?
