Went over to see family today and the car needed a drink so we decided to stop off at the petrol station opposite The Cricketers. Anyway I was thrown to see three coaches parked up by JE James and a few walking around the away end in what at first glance I thought were football shirts. I then look over the road and outside the boozer were a couple of stewards, we pull out of the petrol station forecourt and I see more stewards and more fans walking around the away end of the ground in shirts.

Who's playing today I wonder? I didn't read anything about any U21 game or anything?

Anyway I then see a flag approach me from the distance with "Wildcats" on it and some horrendous looking tiger creature and it dawns on me that there was a bit of Egg Chasing going on at BDTBL.

Anyway dare I say it..... there was probably a hundred or so Wakefield fans scattered around the place and in all fairness it looked like a decent little atmosphere down there. However I checked the attendance when I got home and was shocked to see that it was only 1700 or so which begs the question as to why they want to play on our beautiful pitch and our beautifully historic ground.

I've got nowt against it personally I have said this before. Our wonderful new pitch is designed to take the strain and good business sense says we take the rent from our egg chasing neighbours. But surely they have other more cost effective options around the city?.With attendances like this surely one of our non-league neighbours could cater for The Eagles requirements and earn a bit of extra revenue?

It wouldn't work at Sheffield FC because their pitch has a massive drainage problem. There would be games constantly being postponed during winter.

It wouldn't work at Hallam because of the severely sloping pitch and it's too small even for rugby crowds.

Stocksbridge freezes over frequently due to being on high ground.

To be honest I'm happy to have them at the Lane. I want us to proudly support all Sheffield teams (except one) and I'm glad we're doing our bit.

As I said in my OP and in threads before this, I have no issues with them playing at our place what so ever. The pitch can take it and we boost the coffers in the process. I just wonder how net worth it is for either party with attendances as small as this though.

It's a valid point. I think the arrangement is more due to the lack of suitable venues in the city, so we're the best choice, mainly due to the central location of the ground. The Eagles are always going to struggle to be a big draw though due to Sheffield being the only big city in Yorkshire that has no sizeable rugby following. It's not the perfect ground for them and doesn't benefit us financially in any significant way. So it's basically just good PR for United if anything.

The problem is that whenever the Eagles play at the Lane the atmosphere is virtually not existent with a couple of thousand dotted around the ground.

What would be the best option for the Eagles is if the council helped them to build a 10k capacity stadium to get them in line with the super league requirements. There is the catchment area in place for them to thrive, and they are well run enough to be able to have a stab at Super League in the next 5 years, it is just they lack the facilities.

Millmoor's still standing and apparently in decent nick - it would be perfect for them, and Rotherham Titans too.

Aren't they building a ground for the at Don Valley with about a 5k capacity?

And S6 is a shit hole not used to crowds as big as 1700

Sheffield fc are trying to get funding to go back to olive grove, make it big enough for both of them.

Not unless Sheffield council have managed to get their magical unicorns shitting gold Dubloons yet...

Sheffield Council appoint new CFO...

On Saturday I was a guest of the match-ball sponsors, Presto Tools (Blades to a man :) ) and we were taken on a tour of the dressing rooms, dugouts etc. John Garrett told us that we were forbidden to walk out onto the new Desso pitch

I've been trying to understand why we weren't allowed to walk on it when, 24 hours later, there's a couple of dozen rugger boys allowed to dig it up...

Your fancy high heels would have sunk in much deeper than the rugger studs

Went to the game on Sunday and the Eagles were very good for their win. They defended excellently in the second half, probably the best defensive display at the Lane since Harry Maguire last played for United. Think Aston likes the Eagles to play in Sheffield so when they get the chance they take it.

Reading the programme it looks as though the new DVS will be open at the very earliest at the back end of next summer, it sounds as though the Eagles management are writing it off until 2017. My money would be on them playing at the Lane next season. If I were the Eagles I'd have tried to do a ground share with either Sheffield Club at Olive Grove or Handsworth Parramores when they build a new ground at Handsworth.

I've said it before but they should try to use Bramall Lane as a venue all year round, especially now with the durability of the new Desso pitch. Blades in the Prem and Eagles in Super League would be great exposure for the Lane. Ditto if they started getting big outdoor concerts on in the summer.

There was talk of Kell Brook staging a World Title defence here as well this summer but guessing the pitch being re-laid put the end to that. Maybe next year then.
